season walking dead The spin-off series Daryl Dixon finally appears. While this second outing is a sequel to its first season, it’s already shaking things up in a big way.

There will be spoilers throughout, so be careful if you haven’t watched the season opener.

Daryl is still struggling to find his place in France

Daryl Dixon: The Book of Carol begins two weeks after the end of the first season

The first chapter of Daryl Dixon: The Book of Carol opens with a brief exchange between Daryl and Laurent in France. It reveals that there is only a two-week time jump between the end of season one and the beginning of season two. Although this episode focuses largely on Carol, Daryl seems to be slowly but surely advancing the main story of France and the Union.

Daryl trains Laurent in self-defense with weapons; however, Losang, leader of the Union of Hope, opposes these lessons. When Daryl challenges him and explains why the young boy needs to learn to defend himself, Losang explains how important it is for Laurent to “maintain empathy.”

Later in the episode, a conversation about Laurent’s participation in a mysterious ceremony and his possible ascension as the new Messiah implies that the League has much bigger plans for Laurent, and that Daryl’s training may be getting in the way. After all, it’s implied at the end of Daryl Dixon’s season one that Laurent is immune to the zombie virus, which would be a game-changer for the entire series.

Gene returns as the main antagonist of the series

Gene narrowly escapes Daryl after an explosion gives him time to escape.

When Losang reveals to Daryl that a small team will be interfering with a convoy to free multiple hostages captured by Marion Gene (the series’ main antagonist), Daryl immediately signs up to help.

While Daryl and his friends easily manage to rescue the hostages from the convoy, Gene (Anne Charrier) staggers out of the vehicle and looks at Daryl. As he reloads his rifle to aim and possibly shoot Gene, there is an explosion behind him and as he turns back to Gene, Gene disappears.

Don’t expect this to be the last we see of Gene, as the teaser trailer at the end of the episode detailing what to expect from the rest of the season reveals that he’ll be playing a big role again.

Carol is back and remains as threatening as ever

After learning that Daryl is in France, Carol steals back Daryl’s signature crossbow.

Unsurprisingly, the bulk of episode one focuses on Carol. Although he made a brief appearance at the end of season one, his return as a series regular in this new season is a big win for fans.

As the sole survivor of The Walking Dead’s first season, Carol represents a great deal of nostalgia, and this first episode does a great job of reintroducing her into the universe while also acknowledging just how long she’s been around.

Carol manages to track down the junkyard and the survivors who witnessed Daryl’s kidnapping and subsequent arrival in France. When he sees Daryl’s crossbow, he immediately knows he has found the right place. After threatening them, they tell him: Daryl went to France.

Although she seems to have lost hope, Carol sees a plane flying overhead and follows it to a heavily fortified location. In classic Carol fashion, she feigns injury and is greeted by a stranger who kindly offers to spend the night.

Ash is a brand new character who lost his son at the beginning of the zombie outbreak.

The man, whose name is revealed to be Ash, is a single father who tragically lost his son at the beginning of the zombie epidemic.

Carol, who lost her daughter Sophia in season 2 of The Walking Dead, lies to Ash and claims that her daughter is in France to get him to help her fly to Europe.

The first episode does a great job of establishing the fact that despite completely reinventing herself after Sophia’s death, Carol is still troubled by the passing of her child. It’s something that will be a big aspect of his character throughout the season.

Carol and Ash fly away and begin their journey to France

Episode one ends with Carol and Ash flying to France

Although she initially says no, Ash agrees to help her. After a very close call and some crazy zombie killings, including airplane propellers completely tearing the Walkers apart, the duo manage to take flight and begin their journey to France.

Although Ash seemingly trusts Carol and believes her lie, an explosive confrontation can be expected when he realizes that Carol has gone to France to find Daryl.

La gentillesse des Étrangers is an explosive first chapter that sets the stage and moves quickly for Daryl Dixon: The Book of Carol. It’s sure to be an exciting season and epic episode for The Walking Dead series.

The second episode of Daryl Dixon: The Book of Carol will be released Sunday, October 6, 2024. Don’t forget to check out those times for the recap of the second episode.
