Man swore at judge after being accused of meth smuggling during search for ‘suspicious devices’

Abel Oliveras | Madison County Jail

REXBURG — A 53-year-old man was arrested after police say they found methamphetamine while searching his car for suspicious devices. Later, after learning about the allegations, he cursed the judge.

Abel Oliveras is accused of trafficking methamphetamine. He is accused of bringing a large amount of contraband into a correctional facility in another felony case.

On Sept. 15, Oliveras reportedly brought liquid methamphetamine in a contact lens case into the prison to deliver to another inmate, according to court documents. This occurred just days after he posted the bond.

Around 4:15 p.m. Monday, Rexburg Police Officers conducted a traffic stop on a white 2002 Ford F-150 after an automatic license plate reader alerted officers that the truck was suspected of “possible drug trafficking,” according to court documents.

An officer reportedly saw the truck speeding on West Main Street and pulled the driver over.

Rexburg Police Department Deputy Chief Gary Hagen confirmed to EastIdahoNews.com that the driver was identified as Oliveras.

Officers reportedly found two “suspicious devices” in the car during the traffic stop. Police later asked the public to avoid the area while they continued the investigation.

Officers later confirmed there were no explosives in the truck but said they found “commercial mortars that had been modified and removed from their original tubes and then taped with long wicks.”

But after a K9 officer sniffed the truck from the air, officers found “205 milliliters of liquid methamphetamine in a Coca-Cola can, 231.5 milliliters of liquid methamphetamine in a Sprite bottle, and 4.32 grams of crystal methamphetamine inside,” police said. truck.

Police also discovered Oliveras was driving with a suspended license. He was later arrested and transported to the Madison County Jail.

During a hearing held via Zoom before Magistrate Judge Steven Gardner on Tuesday, Oliveras apparently lost his temper and made comments that Gardner said were not helpful to his case.

When asked if Oliveras understood the charges against him, he replied, “I understand that the detective is quite dishonest,” according to court records.

Asked if he understood his rights in the case, Oliveras said, “No, my rights have been violated many times.”

Oliveras repeatedly shouted profanities at the judge, including that the drug trafficking charge was “bulls***.”

“I’m not going to sit here and stand here,” Oliveras said. “While you’re telling me all this bullshit that I haven’t even done.”

After being pardoned and told that it “didn’t help your case with your language today,” Oliveras told Gardner, “I’ll deal with my lawyer, you deal with your wife.”

Oliveras’ preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 2. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment.

Although Oliveras has been accused of these crimes, this does not necessarily mean that he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
