One person killed in fire on Interstate 65 in Louisville near Kennedy Bridge

The driver of a tractor trailer died Saturday afternoon when his vehicle caught fire on southbound Interstate 65 near the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge, Louisville Metro Police said Sunday. The interstate reopened to traffic around 9:15 p.m. Saturday.

It was learned that there were no other injuries in the accident. Just a few hours later, one person was injured after another collision nearby.

LMPD spokesman John Bradley said Sunday that the accident occurred around 5 p.m. when the driver of the tractor trailer lost control of his vehicle and the trailer crashed into the concrete median. After the fire started, the driver could not escape.

Police don’t yet know what caused the driver to lose control and crash into the median. LMPD’s traffic unit is investigating.

LMPD said crews from the Louisville Fire Department and Okolona Fire Protection District worked to extinguish the fire.

The deceased has not yet been identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
