In a press release, BCCI warned overseas players to withdraw from the IPL post-commitment.

Indian Premier League (IPL) finally announced the regulations for the upcoming mega auction on Saturday. In a press release, BCCI Honorary Secretary Jay Shah explained that the decision was taken following ‘a constructive dialogue with the owners of the 10 franchises in July’.

In the past, we have seen foreign players withdraw from the tournament at the last minute, creating an environment of chaos. Now BCCI has come up with a new way to deal with this.

BCCI takes drastic measures

According to the press release, all overseas players will be required to register for the Grand Auction. If any cricketer from abroad does not register, they will be ‘ineligible’ to register for next year’s auction. Additionally, if a player from abroad is selected after registering for the auction and withdraws before the start of the season, he will be banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for two seasons.

Pat Cummins last year (acquired by SRH) 20.5 crore) and Mitchell Starc (acquired by KKR) Huge contracts of ₹ 24.75 crore were bagged in the mini auction. In the past, we have seen that overseas players register more in the mini auction as the bidding war increases in the mega auction, compared to the mega auction. The new rule makes it harder for players to skip the mega auction.

In terms of players withdrawing, we saw Jason Roy withdrawing from IPL 2022 after being bought by Gujarat Titans and with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. So did Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson.

We will also see the Impact Player rule continue for the 2025-27 cycle. In the past, high-profile stars and former players like Rohit Sharma have pointed out that the rule could be a setback in the development of all-rounders. However, it seems that the BCCI has decided to continue the rule in the next three seasons as well.

The Impact Player rule was introduced in the 2023 season and has always been a huge topic of discussion. Since the inception of the Impact Player rule, nine of the ten highest totals in IPL history have been recorded; this allows a team to take out the first XI player and bring in a specialist batsman or bowler depending on the match situation.
