Video shows moments before fatal police shooting on Maine Bridge

KITTERY (WGME) — New video released by the Maine Attorney General’s Office shows the moments before police shot and killed a suspect on the Piscataqua River Bridge last month.

The video was obtained by: CBS13 I-Team through a public records request.

On Aug. 29, police said they received a 911 call from Trent Weston, who said he had gotten into a fight with his wife in New Hampshire and that she had died.

New Hampshire State Police then went to the home in Troy, near Keene, and found the suspect’s wife, 37-year-old Brittany Weston, dead.

Then at 2:30 a.m., police tracked his phone to Kittery and found Weston in the southbound lane of I-95, in the middle of the bridge, right on the Maine side. Investigators said they tried to negotiate with Weston to surrender but were unsuccessful.

In the video released by the AG, which appears to have been taken from a traffic camera, Weston can be seen sitting on the edge of the bridge.

Approximately eight seconds into the video, Weston is seen raising his right arm before being shot multiple times and then falling 45 meters into the river below.

CBS13 edited the video to end just before Weston was shot by police.

Slowing down the video, Weston appears to be holding something in his hand, but it’s hard to tell what it is due to the quality.

In August, investigators said Weston “raised a firearm” before a Maine State Trooper and two New Hampshire State Troopers shot at him.

After Weston’s body was pulled from the river by the Coast Guard, police said they found the body of Weston’s 8-year-old son, Benson, in the backseat of his car.

“Law enforcement officers on scene located an 8-year-old child who had been fatally shot in the backseat of the vehicle,” said Col. William Ross of the Maine State Police. “The child’s death is not related to the police officer’s use of a deadly weapon ‘force.”

The Maine Attorney General’s Office is still investigating the use of deadly force by three troopers. Under state law, the AG has six months to determine whether the attack was justified; This means the final report must be published by March 1, 2025.
