Automotive giants Hyundai Motor Group and Kia have announced a new strategic technology partnership with Samsung Electronics to help them transition to the future of Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs).

To talk TechRadar at the Consumer Electronics Show Chang Song, President and President of Hyundai Motor Group’s Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) Division, explained in Las Vegas earlier this year how Hyundai and Kia are rapidly moving towards the SDV era, where constantly connected cars can do more than just passengers. A to B offers on-demand services, interaction with partner applications and control elements of the smart home.

The recent partnership with Samsung reinforces this idea and will further integrate Samsung’s SmartThings IoT platform with the future infotainment system that Chang Song’s department is busy developing.

This also means Popular Galaxy smartphones from Samsung It will enjoy greater integration with future cars, allowing users to check important vehicle data such as battery range, upcoming service intervals and even the location of their vehicle via their phones.

The partnership with Samsung proves Hyundai Motor and Kia’s commitment to a future where the automobile as we know it is not just a method of transportation but becomes part of our digital lives.

Chang Song talked about his plan to invite third-party developers to create “perfect apps” for their future systems; this would effectively do the same thing that Internet Explorer did for Microsoft computers in the 1990s. software.

Software Defined Vehicles, and to some extent electric vehicles, are driving the automotive industry towards cars becoming a commodity, where customers treat their vehicles like smartphones, cutting and switching depending on who offers the best digital experience.

The private ownership model as we know it today will likely change as advances in technology will allow companies like Hyundai and Kia to become transportation service providers rather than just automakers.

Song’s influence in software development and Samsung’s recent integration will bring the broader digital world into the automobile. Controlling smart refrigerators, activating lights remotely, and being able to locate a vehicle via a Galaxy phone are just the beginning.
