Why Your Chromebook Won’t Turn On Even When Plugged In (And How to Fix It)

Chromebooks are useful laptops for anyone who wants or needs a budget-friendly laptop. Acer Chromebook Plus 515. They’re great for Google loyalists who really want to get involved in the company’s ecosystem and have easy access to Google’s suite of programs across all their devices. However, there are some issues that users may encounter and may affect them. Since I’ve never purchased a Chromebook. Gaming, for example, isn’t exactly the best on a Chromebook. Additionally, like all known computers around the world, Chromebooks have their share of technical issues.

One of the worst problems to encounter is Chromebook not turning on. Yes, one Chromebook constantly crashingand other similar problems are annoying, but significantly complicate troubleshooting when the laptop won’t turn on. Usually the solution will be to plug the Chromebook into the charger as this is a sign that the computer is dead. So what does one do when even that doesn’t work? Frankly, the keys will not respond in any meaningful way even if the computer is not starting, so getting into ‘Settings’ is almost impossible. Don’t worry, there are a few methods you can try if you encounter such a problem.

If your Chromebook doesn’t turn on when plugged in, make sure the charging cable is fully plugged into the Chromebook and the wall outlet. If there is no indicator that the computer is charging (usually a small LED light around the charging port), check that it is plugged into an outlet controlled by a switch on the wall and that it is on. Otherwise, try a different outlet.

Once you determine that the outlet is working, Google recommends charging the Chromebook for 30 minutes before trying to turn it on again. There are cases where it may take up to 24 hours to charge a battery. If that doesn’t work, you’ll want to eliminate any problems with your charging cable by using a different cable. If there ever was one, that is it. Obviously, not everyone has more than one charger for their devices. It is also possible that some peripherals are interfering with the computer’s boot process. Peripherals typically connected via USB, such as external hard drives, keyboards, and mice. Unplug such devices and see if that helps the problem.

If neither method produces promising results, there is probably a problem with the charging port or the battery itself. If this is the case, you’ll want to contact your Chromebook’s manufacturer (Acer, Asus, HP, etc.).

It is possible that hard resetting the Chromebook can fix all your problems. Okay, maybe not all your problems, but you can get the Chromebook to boot up and you don’t even need the computer to be on to do it. You will need the following:

1. Press and hold the refresh key (which is the circular arrow key) and tap the power button.
2. The Chromebook should turn on and if it does, release both buttons.
3. Alternatively, you can try pressing and holding the back button, refresh key, and power button simultaneously for at least 10 seconds.

Some Chromebook models, such as the Samsung Series 5 and Series 5 550, use a dedicated reset button instead. It is located in a small hole at the bottom of the laptop, where a paper clip is needed to press the reset button. Other Chromebooks require pressing the reset button or removing and replacing the battery while simultaneously reconnecting the power adapter.

Resetting a Chromebook resets all of its hardware and may delete some files in the ‘Downloads’ folder. This is not the same as a factory reset, which can only be done if the Chromebook boots up successfully.
