Noah Lyles’ girlfriend Junelle Bromfield has revealed how comparisons to Kenyans and Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o helped her overcome colorism and negative comments about her appearance, ultimately gaining confidence in her beauty and inspiring other young black women.

The two-time Olympian said she struggled with self-confidence issues growing up, but her mother always worked day and night to make her feel comfortable. However, it was quite a difficult process as he heard many people saying negative things about him.

The Jamaican quarter-miler revealed that when she got her hair cut around 2016, people would make fun of her and say she looked like a Kenyan and not a Jamaican, and she would be annoyed by it, and some would even compare her to Lupita Nyong’o.

But when he joined the online community, he saw only positive messages on Lupita Nyong’o’s accounts and began to believe that if she looked like Lupita, she was just as beautiful. From that moment on, Junelle Bromfield began to believe in her beauty and never looked back.

“Growing up, I had never heard, ‘Oh, you’re so beautiful, except for my mother.’ What I heard was, ‘You look different than us,’ or when I went to church and my sisters and brothers were coming with me, you heard people say, especially kids because they can be cruel, they would say, ‘Are you sure that’s your sister because you don’t look anything like that?’” Junelle Bromfield said.

“So it was in 2016, I cut my hair and when I cut my hair I got a lot of ridicule and when I ran to the championships people were like, ‘You look like a Kenyan’ or something like that. I’ve also heard a lot that I look like actress Lupita. They were saying online: “You are beautiful and if I look like Lupita, I’m beautiful too.” So I started to love myself more and when I looked in the mirror I just saw beauty and believed in it.” he added.

Noah Lyles’ girlfriend Junelle Bromfield has detailed her fear of traveling to her home country of Jamaica to visit her family because she feared for her life.


She now continues to inspire young black women to embrace their beauty without focusing on what the world says about their appearance.
