Week of 23-27 September

Soap Center Looking at the Hits and Misses worlds of the week of September 23-27 Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, The Bold and the BeautifulAnd The Young and the Restless.

Hits and Misses

Things we think work and things we think don’t work.

The Young and the Restless

HIT: Sharon Case. Again. Y&R showcased Sharon Case this week, and while the subject matter was beyond dark and difficult to handle, Case accomplished everything the show asked of her.

MISS: The Quadrangle consisting of Sally, Adam, Chelsea and Billy. These four are starting to feel like this: Pulley is imitating Real. remember the old ones Good Morning America Servers that initiate a relationship outside the offset? Their lovers then bonded and came together because they were on the other end of separations. Is this what’s happening here? Because who could hurt Adam (Mark Grossman) more than Sally (Courtney Hope) did when she got together with her brother? Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson).

HIT: Revenge Club. Having said what we said about Sally and Billy, we really enjoyed the camaraderie between Sally and Audra (Zuleyka Silver) as they talked about getting revenge and having revenge sex. But this revenge club needs one more woman, and we think Lily (Christel Khalil) should join their unofficial club. Right now he’s doing the revenge thing pretty well, as long as it doesn’t backfire (which it will).

HIT: Adam and Faith. The man always feels like an island, and no one who encounters him at the park, Crimson Lights, or anywhere else is ever happy to see him. While his conversation with Faith (Reylynn Caster) begins like this, they end up having a beautiful moment where he listens to her concerns about Sharon and gives her some good advice.

MISS: The characters get to have a lot of points of view. We never thought we’d say this, but there are a few characters on Y&R that have a lot of perspective. We hear every thought that comes into their brains. Three of the biggest examples of this are Billy, Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan), and Phyllis (Michelle Stafford). Billy and Chelsea, especially. We understand that they are struggling, but we don’t have to hear about their problems 24/7. Billy’s podcast phase still triggers us.

Days of Our Lives

HIT: Melinda bonds with Paulina and Ava. Ever since Connie (Julie Dove) killed Li Shen (Remington Hoffman) and Sloan (Jessica Serfaty) left town, we’ve been wondering if Melinda (Tina Huang) would disappear. But we were less worried when Kristen (Stacy Haiduk) hired him at DiMera. It was nice to see Paulina (Jackée Harry) invite Melinda to lunch after she was rescued from the DiMera secret room and show that Ava (Tamara Braun) cared about her presence. I love this.

MISS: All episodes Body and Soul. We realized that we preferred smaller doses. Body and Soul reboot. On Tuesday, September 24, behind-the-scenes soap-related drama took over the entire episode. We hope this won’t happen too often in the future.

HIT: Fiona meets Sophia. While both Fiona (Serena Scott Thomas) and Sophia (Madelyn Kientz) were sowing chaos in their own lives, it was nice to see them share some peace, cheesecake, and conversation at The Bistro. This was a great way to get more perspective from these two.

MISS: Hypocritical talk. While we understand why EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) hates Eric (Greg Vaughan) and will use any ammunition to pin it on him, his conversations often come off as hypocritical. He’s done worse things, but he still doesn’t hesitate to nail Eric for killing Daniel (Shawn Christian). Also, Holly (Ashley Puzemis) bonding with EJ while rejecting Eric gives off the same vibes, especially since she overdosed on drugs. At least find out the circumstances behind what Eric did, Holly!

General Hospital

JURY OUT: Jason and Anna. While we’re still processing this huge Jason (Steve Burton) and Anna (Finola Hughes) moment, we can say for sure that Jason and Anna getting together isn’t on our bingo card. However, a random poll by the Soap Hub writing team resulted in this being called a HIT until further notice. We reserve judgment. So the jury remains out.

HIT: The return of Martin Gray. During this character’s long hiatus, Martin Gray (Michael E. Knight) adopted a new look, losing his accent and gaining a “give it two you know what” attitude. He doesn’t seem afraid of Sonny (Maurice Benard). He tells it like it is to Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and has a great strategy session with Molly (Kristen Vaganos). Did you see what he did to Lucy (Lynn Herring)? Wow, that was brutal but we loved it. Welcome back, Michael E. Knight!

HIT: Jordan and Alexis’ granny talk. Jordan (Tanisha Harper) visits Alexis in Pentonville, where the deputy mayor asks the lawyer if Molly will help take TJ’s (Tajh Bellow) baby. We haven’t heard enough from Jordan and Alexis’ perspectives throughout this entire surrogate mother story. It was great to hear them talk about how they were sad they couldn’t be baby Irene’s grandmother. They also chatted about how they will love each other’s children forever, even if they break up. The conversation was realistic, grounded and overdue.

WOMEN: Ned vs. Michael and Drew. We didn’t miss the ELQ discussions between Ned (Wally Kurth), Michael (Chad Duell) and Drew (Cameron Mathison). Understandably, this had to happen since Valentin (James Patrick) was a fugitive. And yes, Ned helped cause the mayhem by hitching his car to Valentin, but he had his own reasons. But it was odd that Michael and Drew insisted Ned shouldn’t be CEO even though they couldn’t find a reason. Why is Michael more deserving of this title? Also, the audience knows that Michael is covering up for Sonny. That alone should disqualify him.

MISS and HIT: Willow and Drew are furious. Unfortunately, we’re not feeling all this talk about Drew and Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) staying away from each other. And we’re not sure why Drew keeps looking for Willow. It’s time for the secret to be revealed so we can move on. Luckily, James (Gary James Fuller) sets the express train in motion by spilling the tea to Ned about the secret kiss!

HIT AND MISS: Combination of Sonny, Carly, Brennan and Natalia. The potential hit pairing is Carly (Laura Wright) and Brennan (Charles Mesure). They are intriguing as a couple and we want to see how their relationship develops. Not so Natalia (Eva LaRue) and Sonny.

HIT: Cody and Tracy. We felt the bond between them especially on Friday. Once again, Tracy (Jane Elliot) had to apologize to Cody (Josh Kelly) for overreacting. But all of this was because he didn’t want to lose another friend or person in his life. That was the first time we truly felt their friendship. It was beautiful.

The Bold and the Beautiful

HIT: Hope and Carter. Our wish for Hope (Annika Noelle) to break up with Finn (Tanner Novlan) may come true sooner than we think. Hope and Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor) spent some quality time together and you know what? We love the little things we’ve seen so far. We were encouraged.

MISS: Taylor told Li that she didn’t want her family to know about her heart failure. Forget that late last year, B&B was clearing out its cast to devote tons of time to Eric Forrester (John McCook) dying from a mysterious illness storyline. Now we’re heading into a period where Taylor (Rebeccas Budig) is dying of heart failure. I hope the show shakes things up a bit. However, he does not want any of his family to know about his diagnosis. Li (Naomi Matsuda) knows, and apparently Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) knows too. Let’s pray that everyone knows what Taylor is going through now that they’ve seen her breakdown.

HIT and MISS: Brooke and Taylor want to be friends again. We set out on this path. Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Taylor tried to form a friendship, but it never worked. But the fact that they are self-aware enough to want to put their resentments and pasts aside – we agree. But our expectations are low because at some point her feelings for Ridge will ruin everything.

HIT: Crew Morrow stars as Will Spencer. We’re giving Crew Morrow the green light because 1) his chemistry with his TV parents is perfect. Will is being realistic about Bill (Don Diamont) and Katie (Heather Tom) getting back together. Of course, he would be very happy if it happened. But does he need it and will he play? Parent Trap To make this happen? No. And 2) It looks like the series will further highlight the rivalry between Will and RJ (Joshua Hoffman). The scene this week where Will brought up Lunatic Luna (Lisa Yamada) was very good. RJ needs competition. He is very comfortable.
