SAVI will host its fourth blindfold bowling tournament this weekend

The Visually Impaired Support Alliance (SAVI), a nonprofit organization that helps visually impaired adults and their families, will host its fourth annual Blind Bowling Tournament at Southern Lanes in Owensboro on September 28-29. The unique fundraiser simulates the experience of blind bowlers, giving sighted participants the chance to bowl using the rails while blindfolded.

Organizers said this year’s event has special significance as SAVI celebrates its 10th anniversary. The support group provided resources, workshops, and monthly meetings for a decade.

There is still room for two more teams and local businesses and individuals are encouraged to participate.

“We want to raise awareness for the blind in our community and show that individuals who are blind or visually impaired can also enjoy activities like bowling,” said Rick Boggess, one of the group’s founders and board secretary. “With the help of our bowling rails that act as guides, we have created a way for people to experience bowling the way we do.”

The Blindfold Bowling Tournament, which had to suspend the event for several years due to the pandemic, has grown steadily in 2019 since its first year. Boggess emphasized the community’s support, citing corporate sponsors such as the Owensboro Lions Club and Owensboro Professional Firefighters Local 870. Unifirst Corporation and Fraternal Order of Police Owensboro Lodge 16.

“We have had great support from our sponsors and they will be recognized at the event,” Boggess said. “We are grateful to everyone who helped make this possible.”

Proceeds from the tournament will support SAVI’s efforts to assist visually impaired individuals in Daviess and surrounding counties. The organization’s work includes informing the public about visually impaired people, advocating for equal employment opportunities, and providing resources for education and rehabilitation programs.
