Thorp mayor involved in fatal cycling crash

CLARK COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) – Earlier this month, a cyclist was killed when he was struck by a semi tractor trailer driven by the mayor of Thorp.

According to a news release from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call came in about the crash around 8:46 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Initial investigation showed that a semitractor trailer driven by 63-year-old Richard Wnek was traveling eastbound on County Highway N when it struck a bicycle also traveling eastbound. The crash occurred near Dickerson Boulevard in Clark County’s Worden Township.

65-year-old cyclist Andrew Niedzwicki was thrown from the bicycle that hit him and was thrown onto the south shoulder of the road. Wnek pulled over and called 911.

Niedzwicki was taken to hospital and pronounced dead from his injuries. Wnek escaped uninjured in the accident.

This incident is still under investigation.
