Providence Bruins Announce University of Southern Maine Head Coach Matt Pinchevsky as Guest Coach – The Hockey Writers – Boston Bruins

According to one statement, Providence Bruins announced He said Matt Pinchevsky will join the coaching staff as a guest coach throughout training camp through the National Hockey League Coaches Association (NHLCA) BIPOC and Women Coaches Program.

Pinchevsky was one of two coaches and one manager selected to attend AHL camps this season through the program. The other two will join the team Rockford Ice Hogs.

In 2022, the NHLCA launched this program. giving opportunities to minority coaches at every level. It gives them the opportunity to hone their skills as coaches, network with NHL teams, and increase their visibility to a higher level than they are currently at. While the program has been in existence since 2022, this is the first year that offers have been extended to preseason camps.

Pinchevsky’s Connections to New England

During the 2002-03 season, Pinchevsky was on the roster of the Bridgewater Bandits, a junior league team from Bridgewater, MA. At the time, the Bandits were playing in the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL), but now they play in the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL). They play their home games at Bridgewater Ice Arena.

Following his time at Bridgewater, Pinchevsky played three years of college hockey at Curry College in Milton, MA, from 2003 to 2006. Pinchevsky’s time with the Colonels was very limited, during which he only played in seven games and recorded only three points (all assists).

After nearly 10 years away from hockey, Pinchevsky returned to hockey as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights of the Metropolitan Junior Hockey League (MetJHL), according to Elite Prospects.com. After one season as head coach there, he left coaching for a few years before returning to the bench in New England.

When Pinchevsky returned for the 2019-20 season, he began the next steps of his coaching journey as the Director of Player Development in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) and associate head coach for Nolan Howe, head coach of the Maine Nordiques. Unfortunately, the season was canceled due to COVID-19 and so he had to bide his time for the official start of the 2020-21 season, where he spent the entire season in the position he was hired for.

However, after just one season as associate head coach and Director of Player Development, he replaced Howe just 16 games into the season.

Unfortunately, the Nordiques did not make the postseason that season, but after being appointed head coach the following season, Pinchevsky led Maine to the second round of the postseason. In the first round, the Nordiques edged their rivals, the New Jersey Titans, by three games to none. Things weren’t so easy in the second round as Pinchevsky’s squad fell three games to one to the Maryland Black Bears.

After one season as head coach, Pinchevsky returned to the collegiate ranks and was hired by the University of Southern Maine of the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC). In his first season as the Huskies’ head coach, Pinchevsky led them to a 10-14-3 record and advanced to the semifinals of the NEHC tournament, where they eventually fell to the top seed of Hobart College.

this was that First 10-win season since 2010-11but Pinchevsky also led his team to three upset wins throughout the season, including No. 11 seed Norwich University in the opening round of the NEHC tournament.

What Will Pinchevsky Bring to the Camp?

Pinchevsky brings with him a track record of turning teams around, and even though the Providence Bruins haven’t missed the playoffs in over a decade, he hopes to help light a fire under the team and help them bounce back from the day with a run. One.

Pinchevsky hopes to make it to at least the AHL in the near future. While leaving the Bruins would be tough for him, going to camp with Providence would be a good networking opportunity for him to at least get his foot in the door.

Providence will open preseason play on October 5th on the road against the Springfield Thunderbirds at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA, puck drop is at 7:05 p.m.
