Small Fires Everywhere (2020)

Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington are an exciting combination in this drama miniseries based on Celeste Ng’s novel of the same name. Inside Small Fires EverywhereWitherspoon plays Elena Richardson, a wealthy journalist and single mother of four teenage children. Washington is Mia Warren, an artist and part-time waitress who is single-handedly raising a teenage daughter who moves to the Richardson family to work as their house manager.

The very different lives and economic backgrounds of the two women and their children become intertwined as secrets are revealed and paranoia increases. It all culminates in a truly fiery, explosive ending that’s been teased from the start. You quickly realize that this isn’t going to end well, but the twists, turns, and discoveries along the way for these two fractured characters are worth the journey.

Told over just eight chapters, Small Fires Everywhere It showcases the immense talent of both leads who deliver convincing performances. The series earned several Emmy nominations, but the series was largely forgotten and overshadowed by others.

Death and Other Details Best murder mystery drama you’ll ever watch? No. But it has an engaging, twisty story with a great cast that pulls you from one episode to the next.

The story begins with Imogene Scott (Violett Beane) going on a luxury cruise with her rich best friend. When someone dies, Imogene appears potentially guilty. Detective Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin), who is known for his skills and has an initially unclear history with Imogene, wants to clear her name. However, for unknown reasons, he despises her.

Death and Other Details It goes in unbelievable directions at times, but its mix of light humor combined with salacious tales of the rich and entitled makes it watchable. Patinkin’s star power and screen presence are undeniable, but Beane is a worthy co-pilot who steals every scene he’s in. Stream all 10 episodes and you will feel satisfied at the end of this story. You may even be strangely accepting of the fact that since the show’s cancellation, its second season will never see the light of day.
