Clemson University closed, USC Upstate virtual classes

With a flood watch in place in the Upstate through Friday afternoon due to Hurricane Helene, schools and colleges are making decisions about cancellations and e-learning.

Here’s what we know so far:

Greenville County Schools cancels events through Sunday

“All Greenville County Schools activities are canceled from tonight, September 27, through Sunday, September 29. We will make a decision regarding Monday as soon as we are able to evaluate our buildings,” said GCS Media Relations Director Tim Waller.

Spartanburg Methodist College closed

Director of Marketing Communications Jeremy Handel said the campus is closed and classes have been cancelled.

USC Upstate closed

According to the university’s alert system, the campus will be closed on Friday.

Converse University e-learning Friday

Converse University will begin e-learning on Friday, according to the university’s website.

Clemson University closed

Clemson University’s main campus is closed and will remain closed until Friday, September 27, according to an emergency alert from the college. All classes planned for Friday have been cancelled.

All Spartanburg Community College campuses are closed Friday

All Spartanburg Community College campuses will be closed Sept. 27 due to weather conditions, according to a Thursday press release.

Wofford College is working remotely on Friday

“As Hurricane Helene is expected to have the greatest impact on our region in the early morning hours of Friday, September 27, Wofford College has announced that classes will not meet in person tomorrow. Instead, Wofford classes will be held remotely using the method determined by the faculty,” said Vice President of Marketing and Communications Jo Ann Mitchell Brasington. Additionally, remote work is encouraged for employees unless your work tomorrow is essential to the health, safety and support of Wofford students.”

The college’s Thursday evening and Friday evening volleyball games and Saturday’s football game against Mercer University are still on.

Furman University closes Thursday at 5:30

“We are closing campus from 5:30 tonight until tomorrow night. This is Family Weekend for Furman, so we are also canceling many events,” said Clinton Colmenares, Senior Director of News and Media Strategy at Furman University.

During this closure, all scheduled events on campus have been canceled (including all in-person lectures, labs and meetings related to coursework, CLPs, and student activities). Unfortunately, this includes Family Weekend and athletic events through Friday.

Employees who must work on campus during the closure will be notified by their departments. Other employees may not report to work on campus during the closure. Staff who are not requested to work on campus do not need to work remotely and will be paid according to the inclement weather policy.

Furman’s emergency team will evaluate the campus situation at noon Friday and decide by 2 p.m. tomorrow whether to reopen the campus and continue events on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Colmenares noted that the availability of Dining Services, Furman Police, Facilities Services, and Housing and Residence Life to students will continue to be limited.

“Students will receive more information about available campus services in a separate email. Family Weekend participants will also receive a communication with more details,” he said.

As the Furman University Campus closes until tomorrow night, Colmenares said: “Faculty will receive additional information in a separate email and communicate with their students about course plans.”

he said. “If you are traveling, please use caution and avoid driving through large puddles or standing water on roadways. Students and employees should be aware of their surroundings when walking on campus during high winds and rain.”

Anderson University transitions to distance learning on Friday, no activities at any facilities

Andrew J. Beckner, Executive Director of Public Affairs at Anderson University, said the university operated on a regular schedule on Thursday but would switch to online classes and remote work for employees on Friday.

“No in-person classes, activities or events will be held tomorrow. This change in operations covers all campus facilities, including University Center-Greenville,” Beckner said. “Essential services will be available for those who choose to remain on campus or for those who cannot safely leave or arrive at their destination. Keeping our campus community safe and secure is Anderson University’s top priority.”

Spartanburg County School District 7 e-learning Friday, away varsity game to be decided

According to a post on the district’s Facebook page.“District 7 will hold a regular school day on Thursday but has canceled all after-school and evening activities on Thursday. We will also be holding an eLearning Day on Friday, September 27th.

“Cherokee County will continue to monitor the timing and impact of the storm with the hope that our Viking football team will continue to travel to compete in Gaffney on Friday night. All other after-school programs and events for District 7 are canceled on both Thursday and Friday.”

Anderson County schools open Thursday, e-learning open Friday

Due to expected weather impacts from Hurricane Helene, all Anderson County schools will observe an Education Day on Friday, Sept. 27, according to Dylan McCullough, Public Information officer for Anderson County School District Three. Schools will be open on Thursday.

Individual districts will notify families of changes to after-school activities on September 26 and 27.

“We urge everyone to follow weather alerts as we anticipate the impacts of Hurricane Helene,” McCullough said.

Limestone University cancels lectures and events

Limestone University in Gaffney is canceling classes on Thursdays and Fridays. Faculty and staff offices will also be closed.

Stephenson Dining Hall will be open, and in the event of a power outage on campus, students will be instructed to congregate at the Hines & Riggins Center, where a backup generator is available.

Limestone’s Presidential Inauguration, scheduled for Friday, has been postponed. The Graduation Parade scheduled for Saturday has also been cancelled.
