More than 60 years of work have established the legacy of photographer Robert Frank, whose photographs of iconic figures such as James Baldwin and Mick Jagger are currently on display at MoMA. John Wronn

“Life Dances: Robert Frank in Dialogue” is a new exhibition at MoMA that spans six decades of the famed photographer and filmmaker’s life. Peruse the 250 items on display, including photographs, films, books and other archival materials once owned by the Swiss-born artist known for his unique perspective on American life, compiled from an extensive journey across the United States. Many of them are being shown publicly for the first time. “The enormous impact of Frank’s book ‘The Americans’ meant that he was often remembered as a lonely photographer on a road trip, a Swiss artist who took photographs of an America through which he was a stranger. Yet over the next six decades, Frank continually forged new paths in his work, often engaging in direct artistic conversations with others, and these contributions deserve closer attention,” said Lucy Gallun, curator of photography. The exhibition is open until January 11, 2025. MoMA.organ
