Talk your ass back.

For the upcoming Sukkot holiday, an Amazon seller is offering “Happy Sukkot Gift Boxes,” cute cards with the festival’s Hebrew name on them. Or that was the goal.

The boxes actually say “Tuchus” because the Hebrew was mistranslated. Jewish Twitter is laughing its ass off.

To be completely fair to HOWAF, the company that produces these party favors, they are continuing a long tradition of well-intentioned but ultimately clueless mass-produced goods for Jewish holidays. It’s a long-standing tradition to include shofars, menorahs, and challahs in all party favors, regardless of whether chag is associated with these objects or not. (A shot of Sukkot gift boxes in action shows a man breaking matzo because it’s close enough.)

A lot of sassy humor has emerged from these cultural cross-connections.

But – with all due respect – it’s not that common to see Hebrew mistakes spelling a word that’s funny in itself.

Hebrew letters read from right to left can be misleading, as Jewish Voice for Peace members learned the hard way. at the recently established Seder camp. These tuchus gift boxes might give you pause, unlike many unforced mistakes made by retail giants.

What is Sukkot if not an opportunity to sit in a sukkah to commemorate our ancestors? When we rock the lulav, don’t we also shake our booties (at least a little) from the s’chach? I’m already considering alternative applications for the etrog emoji.

While some may think it’s a form of sacrilege to include such a vile word in a staple Jewish holiday (puns are all intended), these boxes are sure to still make a sought-after party favor for the holiday — unless guests are the butt of the joke.
