How Did the Cincinnati Bengals’ O-Line Perform Against the Commanders?

The Bengals fell to 0-3 after losing in a shootout with rookie Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders. Are we finally seeing the Bengals offense we’ve been waiting for?

The biggest story of the Bengals’ offensive line coming out of Monday Night Football was not only the loss of veteran right tackle Trent Brown but also the official debut of 18th overall pick Amarius Mims. Brown was coming off his worst performance of the season before suffering a season-ending knee injury. However, Mims failed to provide the significant support fans expected and received the band’s worst overall rating.

Correct tackling positioning was a weakness for the group in Week 3; Both Mims and Brown went below 60. Other than that, the core of the offensive line has been improving steadily each week early this season. In Week 1, this group’s four consistent players received an average grade of 70.50 according to my grading process. In week 2, the average increased to 72.62; In Week 3, the average increased to 77.05. Even better, one of those four players had an 85+ performance in the first three games. This week Cordell Volson achieved his second best overall mark of the season with 88.52. Once Mims settles in, Bengals fans will have an impressive group on their hands.

On his way to his impressive overall grade, Volson had a near-perfect run blocking grade (97.06). The fourth-rounder out of North Dakota State was quite impressive in his third season with the Bengals. Ted Karras and the Volson have already posted two games this season with over 80 runs blocked. Orlando Brown Jr. came close to making the club with two games in which he scored over 79, but that fell just short of 80.

Volson completed the sweep by topping the charts in all three grading categories (overall, run blocking and pass protection) in Week 3, posting an 80.68 grade at protection this week. Volson also posted a clean sheet in Week 3 with no pressures, sacks or quarterback hits. Once again the left side of this line (and Ted Karras) have been anchoring the group so far this season. It will be interesting to see if Cappa’s grades improve as the Bengals solidify the right tackle position.

It looks like Volson has arrived after three weeks of play. He is the team’s second-highest average player after Karras. Although Cappa has put in solid performances so far this season, I would like to see more from the veteran, especially as he will be lining up alongside Mims.

I would advise fans not to panic over the rookie right tackle’s poor debut. Not only did he enter the game cold (and due to his own injury), but it was also his NFL debut. I look forward to watching the right side of this line rise in the coming weeks and seeing the success of three solid starters on the left side continue as the Bengals chase an elusive first win of the 2024 season.
