For starters, Image Playground lets you create images from scratch using just a text prompt. You can choose from three different art styles and even choose the image from your photo library to be the featured one. Genmoji is another exciting feature that uses generative AI to generate custom emojis that you can use in conversations or as stickers.

What Genmoji promises is a more personalized experience when communicating with friends or family, but how exactly does this feature work? Here’s everything you need to know about Genmoji and whether your device supports the new AI tool.

What is Genmoji?

Apple crashed for the first time Animoji with iPhone In 2017, this is a feature that uses the Face ID camera and sensor cluster to analyze your facial muscle movements and match them with 3D emoji characters. We later saw the release of a more personal version. Memoji in iOS 12allows users to create their own animated avatars.

Genmoji adds to this experience and provides a more creative way to have conversations on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. This feature allows you to define a custom emoji using a text prompt, create it, and make it seamless to use as a text message or sticker. Like Image Playground, you can create Genmoji from people in your contact list.

Any Genmoji you create will be ready for future use in the emoji keyboard on your Apple device and can be copied and pasted like regular text. This only requires on-device support for AI. iPhones compatible with iOS 18 Devices that support Apple Intelligence will be able to render Genmoji (iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, as well as the latest iPhone 16 series). Macs and iPads with Apple’s M-series chips are also compatible with Apple Intelligence.

How does Genmoji work?

Since emojis are based on the Unicode standard and how they appear depends on the display device, the existence of a feature like Genmoji may seem a bit confusing. Genmojis are essentially personalized images, but they follow text formatting guidelines. Since Genmoji can be inserted flush with text and their size can be changed based on font size, this makes them as easy to use as regular emojis.

All of this is made possible thanks to the NSAdaptiveImageGlyph API, which hosts images as a data object that can be adapted to various resolutions. This means that any app that supports Rich Text Format for messaging or text input can display Genmoji without any difficulty. While app developers will need to add access to this feature, it’s as simple as enabling a single flag in the app’s codebase.

For devices or apps that don’t support rich text formatting, Genmoji can use the metadata feature to send a textual description of the custom emoji instead.
