Horizon: Zero Dawn studio director explains what’s really changed in the last 7 years with side-by-side screenshots

Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered Finally Announced also PlayStation Gaming Status After months of rumors and internet grumbling, we were told we wouldn’t need to re-release games that looked brand new, but one developer has revealed exactly what’s changed in the upcoming remaster.

The announcement trailer for Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered promised that the 2017 robo-dinosaur game would be restored to the same visual quality as its more recent sequel, Horizon: Forbidden West, with over ten hours of new motion capture added to scenes where the camera really zooms in on characters’ faces, as well as improved textures and proper DualSense support.

Otherwise, the trailer struggled a bit to properly highlight just how dramatic Remastered’s changes could be, because, well, Horizon: Zero Dawn was already a rich video game when it launched, and the free PS5 update only cemented that further. Plus, most people were probably watching a mediocre version of the trailer on social media, making comparisons even more ambiguous.

Guerrilla Games’ co-studio director and art director Jan-Bart van Beek later teased the changes on social media, and it was revealed that the team had actually ported Aloy’s entire model from Forbidden West to Zero Dawn. It’s a nice bit of continuity, considering the two games are only six months apart.

“We’ve also reworked character lighting to match the look of (Horizon: Forbidden West) and improved skin tones,” Beek tweeted. “Hair shaders have also been improved. The slight blurriness you see between PS4 and PS5 is due to the PS4 image here having motion blur turned off,” he says of the side-by-side comparison above.

Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered will be released on October 31 as a $10 upgrade for existing owners and will be a continuation of the series. The cursed series of being released in the shadow of a bigger series, this time with Dragon AgeThe debate over whether this reorganization is really necessary is still up in the air, especially A whole new mode has been added to The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered and we’re still in the same discourse, but we’ll see how that plays out for us on Halloween.
