Leading creators join the speaker line-up at Content London 2024 | News

Leading writers and actors will come together at Content London this year to discuss some of their upcoming projects and share their views on the future of the industry.

Award-winning writer and producer Frank Spotnitz will join the event to discuss what the move to AVoD means for content creation for broadcasters, and actor Sally Lindsay will take part in a panel discussing why audiences continue to be drawn to heartwarming crime dramas.

Meanwhile, actors Olafur Darri Olafsson, Genevieve Barr and Andrei Alén will join the previously announced Leah Purcell to talk about their transition into screenwriting and discuss the stories they want to create and see on screen.

During the three-day conference, leading creators and executives from around the world will discuss how they are navigating the new content economy to produce and create high-quality scripted content for global channels and audiences.

More creators participating in the event are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Speaking at Content London:

Frank Spotnitz
Founder and CEO, Big Light Productions
Award-winning writer and producer Spotnitz founded London-based Big Light Productions in 2013 with the aim of producing high-end dramas that receive international attention.
Drama credits include the Emmy-winning The Man in the High Castle for Amazon’s Prime Video, as well as Medici (Netflix, Rai), Ransom (CBS, Global), The Indian Detective (CTV, Netflix) Devils (Sky) and Leonardo (Rai, Prime Video). Big Light has also produced podcasts for Audible, including Radioman starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
Spotnitz began his television career in Hollywood with the groundbreaking science fiction series The X-Files, for which he executive produced, wrote or co-wrote more than 40 episodes, and co-wrote and produced both feature film spin-offs. He shared three Golden Globes and a Peabody Award for best dramatic series for his work on The X-Files, and was nominated for three Emmys for both writing and outstanding drama series.
Spotnitz moved to London in 2010 to create and produce the series Hunted (BBC, HBO), starring Melissa George, and remained in the UK three years later to create Big Light.

Sally Lindsay
Creative director, Saffron Cherry Productions
Lindsay made her film debut in the BBC sitcom The Royle Family, followed by roles in Phoenix Nights, Fat Friends and Coronation Street.
After five years on Coronation Street, Lindsay has appeared on stage and in a number of TV shows, including Channel 5 dramas Cold Call and Intruder, and the Bafta-winning BBC mini-series Murdered for Being Different.
Along with friend Suranne Jones, Lindsay created and starred in Scott & Bailey for Red Productions. She also chaired seven seasons of Sky One’s Mount Pleasant. Lindsay also created, co-wrote and starred in the hit series The Madame Blanc Mysteries for Acorn and C5, and can also be seen leading the new C5 series Love Rat.
In addition to her role at Saffron Cherry Productions, Lindsay is the president of the Women of the Year Award.

Olafur Darri Olafsson
Actor, producer, screenwriter, Act4
Co-owner of Act4 and one of Iceland’s most celebrated actors, Ólafsson has built an impressive career both in front of and behind the camera. He is currently head writer of his first series, Big Brother, which is in development at Act4 in collaboration with ZDF Studios.
Ólafsson has starred in a number of high-profile projects across a variety of platforms. Her upcoming roles include Reykjavik Fusion for Siminn/Arte, produced by Act4, as well as Apple TV+’s Severance and Disney+’s While You Were Breeding.
Ólafsson also has extensive experience as a producer, including the TV series Journey and the film Summerlight… and Then Comes the Night. He has also produced hit series such as The Minister and the film XL.
Ólafsson has a wealth of film credits, having worked with some of the industry’s top directors, and continues to contribute to the film industry with several projects currently in post-production, including Winterreise and Hidden People.

Genevieve Barr
Screenwriter and actor
Barr is best known for co-writing the award-winning, critically acclaimed BBC Two/Netflix series When Barbara Met Alan with Jack Thorne. She is currently writing the contemporary half-hour thriller ID, which has been confirmed by Channel 4/Sony and will begin filming later this year. She is also writing a one-hour drama for the BBC and Netflix, produced by The Forge. Barr has written an episode of Pete Bowker’s Ralph & Katie, which will air on the BBC in 2022.
She’s currently working on original commissions with House, FilmNation and Pulse Films. On the feature side, Barr has a US project in development with Jonathan King (Spotlight, Roma).

Andrei Alen
Actor, director, producer and writer
Alén was born in Helsinki and grew up in London. He started acting at the Helsinki amateur theatre Ylioppilasteatteri, before studying acting at Lahti Folk College and London’s East 15 Acting School.
As an actor, Alén is known for his roles in Aku Louhimies’ The Unknown Soldier (2017), Man in Room 301 and Rig 45. His directorial debut, The Unhanged, was released in 2023.
In addition to producing the world’s first carbon-negative feature film, 2021’s The Wait, Alén also wrote and produced Conflict, an English-language multilingual military and political thriller about a sudden attack on a neutral country by an unidentified enemy attempting to provoke a wider conflict. Produced by Backmann & Hoderhoff and XYZ Films and directed by Aku Louhimies, Conflict (6×60′) will premiere on MTV Finland later this year after debuting at Mipcom.
