The Ear Stick was beaten by the company that made it. On September 25, 2024, almost two years after the Ear Stick was unveiled, Nothing released its follow-up, the Ear Open, the strangest wireless headphones it’s ever made. They take things to a whole new level, both in terms of design and price.

Launching worldwide via a streaming video, the Ear Open is technically Nothing’s second TWS earbud with an open-ear design. The first was the Ear Stick, which came out in late 2022. There’s no evidence that they’re a direct successor, even if the underlying idea is largely the same. As with the Stick, the focus is on making listeners more aware of their surroundings, not cutting them off entirely. There’s no Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).

But Open features an all-new design with silicone hooks that wrap around your ears while maintaining Nothing’s signature translucent look. Directional speakers are positioned outside your ear, preventing sound from leaking while ensuring privacy through a system Nothing calls Sound Seal.

The earbuds are lightweight. They weigh just 8.1 grams each. They’re rated IP54. (The case is similarly dust- and splash-proof.) Nothing beats 14.2mm titanium-coated drivers inside them. Pairing happens over Bluetooth 5.3. There’s fast pairing with Windows and Android devices. You can connect them to two devices at once. Dual microphones and Clear Voice 3.0 technology While it can be used for receiving audio, controls like media playback, volume, and calls are handled through the compression mechanism.

Like other recent Nothing headsets, the Opens support ChatGPT out of the box. More detailed settings are accessed via the Nothing X app.

The earbuds are rated for 8 hours of playback, with the case providing a total of 30 hours. Charging is via USB Type-C. There’s no wireless charging.
