Scott City VB celebrate veterans with win over Oran

The Scott City volleyball team picked a great time to honor its seniors as the Rams swept Oran in three sets (25-19, 25-8, 25-17) on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Scott City High School.

This is a special group of seniors for Rams coach Cindy Henry, who has been here throughout her tenure and helped Scott City win its first district title since 2011.

“I look at these seniors as my babies,” Henry said. “They’ve been with me since freshman year. They’re our core group. They understand a little bit of everything, the grit and perseverance it takes to build a program, and they’ve been here through it all.”

Five seniors also played a role in the Rams’ victory over the Eagles. Lilyan Landis led the way with 14 points, followed by Makenna Gentry, who had 13 digs and a pair of aces, with nine points. Ramsey Spinks led the Rams with 26 assists, while also adding 10 digs and two aces. Maggie Jones also had 15 digs, and Journey Black had 13 digs.

Scott City’s underclassmen also played a big role in the victory. Junior Addisyn Hilleman had 13 digs, right next to Landis, and also had eight aces. Sophomore Layla Estes led the Rams with 27 digs, a feat she has consistently done throughout the season.

“(Layla Estes) plays a critical role,” Henry said. “Layla basically runs our defense.”

The Rams are 2-1-2 in the Dig for Life Tournament at Show Me Center, a period in which Henry is still finding the right chemistry and rotation for his team, and he said that’s helped by the return of freshman Skylar Watson from injury.
