Lorain retains top eight in computer ratings, Avon, Amherst swap places after week 5 – Morning Journal

Despite a tough 35-32 loss to Willoughby South, Lorain remains in the top eight of the computer ratings.

The OHSAA released its official computer ratings on Sept. 24, indicating that the 4-1 Titans were in sixth place, which puts them in the potential to host a Division I, Region 1 first-round playoff game.

Lorain (6.45 rating) trailed South 35-14 at halftime. It attempted a second-half rally, but that rally handed Lorain its first loss of the season.

“I feel like everybody is locked in (after the loss). We’re ready to prepare ourselves so (this type of game) doesn’t happen again,” Lorain coach James Boyeas said.

The Titans were previously ranked fifth in DI, Region 1.

The team, which won last season’s Lake Erie League championship, will next play on the road against Garfield Heights at Bedford Stadium on September 26.

In D-II, Region 6, undefeated Southwest Conference teams Avon (5-0, 2-0 in SWC) and Amherst (5-0, 2-0 in SWC) traded places in the top two seeds. The Eagles, with a 12.8 rating, sit at the top, while Amherst (11.6) moves into second place.

In Avon’s 2-0 start in the SWC, the Eagles have outscored their opponents 96-7, most recently a 38-7 victory over North Ridgeville. They will face Olmsted Falls on the road in Week 6.

Avon also rose to No. 1 in the D-II state poll released Sept. 24.

The Comets’ next SWC opponent will be at home against Avon Lake on September 27. The Comets have not beaten the Shoremen since 2000.

D-II, Region 6 is followed by No. 3 Medina Highland (4-0 record, 11.35 rating), No. 4 Anthony Wayne (5-0, 10.35), No. 5 North Ridgeville (4-1, 9.7), No. 6 Wadsworth (5-0, 9.05), No. 7 Toledo St. Francis (4-1, 7.8838), No. 8 Olmsted Falls (4-1, 7.8) and No. 9 Avon Lake (3-2, 7.3869).

Rocky River (9.85) has the third-highest ranking among D-III, District 10 teams. Midview (5.25) finished seventh despite losing 24-17 to Avon Lake. A team ranked in the top four has a chance to win two playoff home games if they win the first round.

Clearview also has a top-four finish in D-IV, Region 14 after a 42-0 win over Oberlin (0-5).

The Clippers are in fourth place with a rating of 9.7083, despite having one game less than the other teams in their region. They travel to Wellington on September 27.
