Polls show a virtual tie between Colin Allred and Ted Cruz for Texas’ U.S. Senate race

Some polls show this year’s Texas Senate race is nearly tied, boosting Democrats in a state where neither party has won a statewide election since 1994. A new poll released Monday shows Democratic candidate Colin Allred very close to Republican incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz.

The The survey was published The poll by the Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation shows Cruz with a three-point lead over Allred, 48% to 45%. That’s close to the 2.83% margin of error for this poll.

Among Hispanic voters in the state, Allred holds a huge lead of 50% to 39%, an 11-point difference between the Democratic and Republican candidates.

“We’ve continued to see Allred consistently outperform the top candidate in this race. The data shows that this is much more in Allred’s favor than what we saw in the National debate.” Jason Villalba, CEO of the Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation, said:

Polls show Allred’s lead among non-Hispanic voters in Texas continues: She also has a double-digit lead over Cruz among African-American voters and women.

Cruz has a 21 percent lead among likely white voters statewide and a 20 percent lead among likely men.

A close race in the Lone Star State

Monday’s poll isn’t the only one showing a close race in Texas. A poll last week Published by Morning Consult It showed Allred leading the race by one point. Another Emerson College and Hill showed Cruz leading by 4 points over Allred, just outside the 3.3% margin of error.

Allred is a relatively new face in Texas politics. She first won election in 2018, unseating Republican Rep. Pete Sessions, who had served in the same seat for 22 years.

Allred’s seat, Texas’ 32nd congressional district, covers parts of the Dallas metro area and other adjacent suburbs. It was considered a solid Republican seat until Allred’s victory nearly six years ago.

Before entering politics, Allred played four years as a defensive back for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. After his football career, he earned a law degree and then worked as a civil rights attorney.

Things to know about Ted Cruz

Allred’s opponent is incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz, who has served as a senator from Texas for the past 11 years. He replaces Kay Bailey Hutchison, who unseated Bob Krueger, the last Democrat to serve Texas in the Senate.

Cruz served as Texas attorney general before being elected to the United States Senate in 2012. In addition to his Senate duties, Cruz also ran unsuccessfully for president in the 2016 Republican primaries.
