Charli XCX and Lorde put past feud behind them with surprise ‘Girl, So Confusing’ performance on tour

The pop stars previously worked out their issues on a “remix” of Charli XCX’s track “Brat,” which detailed her complicated feelings for the fellow pop star.

Later Chancellor Brat Summer Earlier this year, she released the original version of the album track “Girl, So Confusing,” which delves into her complicated feelings for an unnamed pop star. XCX enlists Lorde to remix track confirmed that the lyrics were inspired by the New Zealand-born “Royals” hitmaker. Now, with their past feud firmly behind them, XCX shocked fans when she brought Lorde on stage and performed the song during Monday night’s tour stop at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

“Let me hear you!” the 32-year-old singer shouts, just as Lorde, 27, appears at the front of the stage and begins delivering her verses in an all-black look that contrasts with her duet partner, to the cheers of the crowd.

As the lights begin to flash, the two join forces on stage and sing the song’s lyrical theme: “What does it feel like to be a girl?” They sing while looking at each other, and finally hug each other when they finish the song.

“Make some noise!” XCX says before hugging Lorde at the end of the set.

After a short while Brat Released in June, XCX sparked fan speculation with the album track “Girl, So Confusing,” a chronicle of her complex web of emotions with another artist. In the original track, XCX discusses her perception that the other woman wanted to watch her peer “fall” and “fail,” and recounts an incident where the musicians reluctantly made plans to make music together during “awkward” meetings.

Naturally, rumors spread online that the song was about Lorde — especially after many interpreted XCX’s singing “(I) think you should come to my party and put your hands up” to her unnamed colleague as a subtle reference to the lyrics of “Team,” in which the New Zealand-born artist laments being “told to put my hands up.” Listeners also speculated that Lorde was likely the subject of the song after XCX included a section in her song “Girl, So Confusing” that hinted at their similar appearance — specifically, her hair, which XCX openly referenced in an interview. Lorde admitted that she was “unable to speak” when she woke up to a raw voice note from XCX describing her feelings about her relationship on the remix. Lorde later vowed to “figure it out” on the song’s remix. “You’re always like, ‘let’s go out,’ but then I cancel at the last minute. I was lost in my head and scared to be in your pictures because I’ve been at war with my body for the last few years. I tried to starve myself and lose weight, then I gained all the weight back,” Lorde sang. “I was full of hate and your life seemed so great. I never thought for a second that my voice was in your head.”

In addition to Lorde, XCX has released several other remixes Brat songs including notable guest stars Billie Eilish on “Guess” and Sivan on “Talk Talk.”
