Carson Senators to add 10 basketball players to school’s Hall of Fame this fall

Carson High School has a long and proud tradition of success in high school basketball, and several of the Senators players will receive the honor of being inducted into the Carson Basketball Hall of Fame this fall.

The Carson boys’ team has won five state championships, including a thrilling run to the 1975 championship. The Carson girls’ team has won six state championships, most recently in 1990.

The 10 new inductees into the Carson Hall of Fame will be honored at the second Dick Stoddard Basketball Hall of Fame induction dinner on Oct. 12 at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City.

Carson High School 2024 Selectees

George Allison (1956): Allison was a three-year letterman (1954-56) for the men’s basketball team. The 1955 team won the Western “A” conference championship with a 9-0 conference record. He earned second-team All-State honors that year. He averaged 14.5 points and 15 rebounds per game.

Mike Griffin (1961): Griffin was a three-year letterman (1959-61) for the boys’ basketball team. The 1961 team won the Northern Nevada AA League Championship with a 15-2 conference record, then defeated Las Vegas High School in the State Tournament before losing to Rancho in the championship game. This was the first state championship appearance for a Carson team since 1949.

Chris Padgett (1981): Padgett played three years of Carson High basketball (1979-81) after transferring from Reno High School for his sophomore year. He helped Carson reach the District Championship all three years. The 1981 team finished the season 24-4 and advanced to the Final Four of the AAA State Tournament in Las Vegas before losing to eventual champion Valley in the semifinals.

Bruce Barnes (1983): Barnes was a three-year letterwinner for the boys’ basketball team (1981-83). As a sophomore, Bruce was a member of the 1981 team that won the AAA Regional Championship and advanced to the Final Four of the AAA state tournament. That team went 24-4 and 13-1 in conference. He was named to the Northern Nevada AAA All-Conference second team.

Chris Rand (1995): Rand played boys basketball for all four years at Carson High School. He was a starter his sophomore year, averaging 18 points and 7 rebounds per game. That year, he was named to the Northern Nevada AAA All-Conference first team and helped lead his team to an 18–9 record. He is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,689 points. He played at Alan Hancock Junior College, Holy Names University, and Lassen College.

First Walters (1985): Walters was a three-sport star at Carson High School (1983-85). The basketball team won the AAA State Championship all three years and had a three-year record of 83-8. He earned Northern Nevada second-team All-Conference honors in 1983 and first-team All-Conference honors in 1984, and was named Northern Nevada AAA All-Conference MVP in 1985.

Amber Andreasen (1989): Andreasen played girls basketball for four years (1986-89). Her teams compiled a 99-14 record and qualified for the State Tournament each year. The 1989 team compiled an undefeated 30-0 record, won the Northern Nevada AAA Regional Championship and the Nevada AAA State Championship.

Jennifer Grey (1990): Gray played all four years (1987-90) as a letterman and helped his teams compile a 109-7 overall record. During his junior and senior years, the teams went undefeated each year, posting 30-0 records and winning the Northern Nevada AAA Regional Championship and the Nevada AAA State Championship. A 60-game winning streak and two state championships earned the 1990 team a No. 20 national ranking by USA Today. Gray is one of Carson High’s top five scorers with 1,491 points.

Melissa Schreiner (1991): Schreiner played basketball for four years (1988–91) and helped lead his teams to a four-year record of 106–10. His teams qualified for the regional and state tournaments each year, with the 1989 and 1990 teams finishing their seasons with an undefeated record of 30–0. The streak ended in 1991 with 63 wins. The 1989 and 1990 teams won both the Northern Nevada AAA Regional Championship and the Nevada AAA State Championship.

Alyson Thurman (2000): Thurman lettered in girls’ basketball for four years (1997-2000). Her teams appeared in every Northern Nevada AAAA Regional Tournament, advancing to the finals in 2000. Her teams also appeared in every AAAA State Tournament, advancing to the semifinals three times. She was named to the Northern Nevada AAAA All-Conference first team her sophomore, junior and senior years. She is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,716 points. She later played at Lassen Community College and Sacramento State.
