Press release
Nokia and ZCorum collaborate to develop DOCSIS Provisioning Adapter for cable-to-fiber migration

  • Nokia has signed an agreement with ZCorum to develop a DOCSIS Provisioning Adapter (DPA) application that will work with Nokia’s Altiplano platform.
  • The DPA will facilitate the fiber-to-the-home transition by enabling cable operators to provide PON ONT and subscriber services using their existing DOCSIS delivery systems.
  • The DPA app will be available through Nokia’s Altiplano Marketplace and will be made available to customers by Nokia.

September 24, 2024
Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it has partnered with ZCorum, a leading provider of diagnostics and managed services for broadband providers, to develop a DOCSIS Provisioning Adapter (DPA) application. The DPA solution will enable cable operators to provide subscriber services over an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and an ITU-based Passive Optical Network (PON) using their existing DOCSIS-based provisioning systems.

Cable operators are upgrading their networks to fiber because it offers the highest performance, scalability, and reliability. This transition often involves implementing a next-generation fiber management solution. For MSOs looking for a more gradual transition from DOCSIS-based Operations Support Systems (OSS), a software-based DPA offers a seamless path. Beyond simplifying the transition to Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), implementing a DPA can also help spread adoption costs and accelerate time to market.

Nokia DPA provides an interoperability function or translation layer that bridges the DOCSIS-based management system and Nokia’s Altiplano Access Controller. Altiplano is an open and programmable platform that provides a complete suite of network management functions and software-defined network (SDN) controls for Nokia’s Lightspan PON networks.

The Nokia DPA application is expected to be available for lab trials by the end of 2024. Once widely available, Nokia DPA will be available through the Nokia Altiplano Marketplace. The Nokia Altiplano Marketplace provides operators with access to a catalogue of ready-made automation tools and network analytics to get the most out of their broadband networks. Additionally, Nokia’s Altiplano Access Controller platform provides operators and third-party developers such as ZCorum with access to open APIs and a Software Development Kit (SDK) to develop value-added applications.

More information and demonstrations about DPA will be available at the Nokia booth (#1903) at SCTE TechExpo 24, September 24-26 in Atlanta, GA.

Jeff Heynen, Vice President He said at Dell’Oro Group: “While cable operators are upgrading their networks in various ways, almost all are deploying PON-based FTTH networks in the greenfield. Many are also overbuilding their entire networks with PON or strategically adding to legacy HFC networks. MSOs will benefit from and welcome any tool that makes deploying PON easier, faster and more cost-effective. Nokia’s DPA will certainly do just that.”

Julie Compann, President and CEO of ZCorum, said: “ZCorum has been serving DOCSIS and fiber operators since these technologies were first introduced, so developing DPA was a natural fit for our company. Cable operators understand the benefits of switching to fiber, but they are also making a significant investment in their DOCSIS infrastructure. DPA will allow them to focus on deploying fiber where it is needed without having to immediately deploy a second supply system. We are delighted to be working with Nokia and the team to make this possible.”

Geert Heyninck, Vice President and General Manager of Broadband Networks at Nokia, said:“As the industry leader in PON, Nokia is ideally positioned to help cable operators transition to next-generation networks and ensure they deliver the best possible service to their subscribers. The DPA application, which we have developed together with the OSS experts at ZCorum, will provide our customers with a simple way to ease their transition to FTTH and become more competitive in their markets.”
