New Clarivate Report Reveals Challenges and Trends Shaping IP Operations

Sharing metrics and strategies Upgrade IP applications

LONDON, September 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Explanatory Plc (NYSE: CLVT), a leading global provider of transformative intelligence, today released a new survey-based report revealing insights and best practices for optimizing intellectual property (IP) operations. Excellence in IP Operations In the report, experts highlight the challenges and opportunities facing IP operations departments from the perspective of strategy alignment, resource allocation, technology enablement, and artificial intelligence (AI) adoption.

The report is based on a global survey conducted over 10 weeks. 184 IP professionals from corporations and law firms, including both Clarivate clients and non-clients, responded to the survey. Clarivate experts analyzed the results to uncover key insights and metrics, helping IP departments understand how to achieve operational excellence.

“The IP landscape has experienced seismic change over the last five years. This survey provides us with key insights into what the industry is experiencing today. By combining these results with our extensive knowledge of IP operations, we can shed light on trends and challenges in IP operations and help organizations and law firms create effective strategies to achieve IP operations excellence,” said Annya Dushine, Senior Director of IP Consulting at Clarivate.

Key findings of the report include:

  • High-scoring IP operations teams align KPIs to business goals: Established and well-communicated key performance indicators (KPIs) and measures of success are associated with strong alignment between IP and business strategy. Of corporate respondents who know and understand their department’s KPIs, 65% also indicated that their IP and overall business strategy are aligned. This figure rises to 70% among law firm respondents.
  • Process management is one of the key factors of success: Organizations with well-managed operational processes not only demonstrate greater strategic alignment, but also make more efficient use of staff. While expanding a staff member’s scope of authority can lead to a greater range of skills, it can also negatively impact job quality and productivity. Getting the balance right is critical to maintaining employee satisfaction and supporting growth.
  • Closing the AI adoption gap leads to excellence: Interest and awareness of AI technology is growing, particularly around complex IP workflows, but deployment remains low. For both corporations and law firms, IP teams that have lagged behind in AI deployment have experienced greater inefficiency. 83% of respondents were not currently using AI in their IP departments, spending more than half of their time on tasks unrelated to their primary role.
  • Technology enablement drives efficiency: Satisfaction with a technology setup is closely tied to well-defined roles and clearly integrated IP workflows. 64% of respondents who reported very low satisfaction with their technology setup also spent more than 50% of their time on tasks outside their primary role. In contrast, respondents who felt well-equipped with the right technology spent significantly less time on unrelated tasks.
  • Limited resources require new approaches to intellectual property operations: When budgets are tight, IP teams need to find new ways to perform their daily tasks more effectively. Exploring new AI-based features and functionality in the software they already use can help.

“IP professionals are under pressure to prioritize and balance strategy and tactics,” said Vasheharan Kanesarajah, Vice President of Intellectual Property Strategy at Clarivate. “The constant flow of new tools, technologies, and business models creates a fluid landscape that can be difficult to navigate. By bringing together our unparalleled data and expertise in people, processes, intelligence, and technology, Clarivate helps clients transform operations and unlock the maximum potential of IP.”
