City of Meridian highlights new law affecting machine gun conversion devices

MERIDIAN, Mississippi – Meridian Police Chief Deborah Naylor-Young and Acting Captain Dareall Thompson provided the following information regarding a recently enacted law regarding the manufacture, possession and use of machine gun conversion devices.

The Meridian Police Department would like the public to be aware of Mississippi State Code 97-37-39. production, possession and use Machine gun conversion devices, known as wrenches.

Beginning July 1, 2024, anyone in the City of Meridian who installs a switch on a semi-automatic firearm, causing it to act as a machine gun and fire multiple rounds at once, will be penalized accordingly.

“Those creating chaos in the City of Meridian should be warned that the Meridian Police Department will prosecute anyone who engages in armed assault with these modified keyed weapons,” Young said.

Fees are as follows:

• A first-time offense is a felony and is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

• A 2nd or higher offense conviction is a felony and is punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.00.
