Paul Mescal gets revenge in Gladiator II trailer

“Rome took everything from me,” says Paul Mescal’s Lucius in new trailer Gladiator II. “But I will have my revenge.”

The latest trailer for Ridley Scott’s sequel features political intrigue, brutal brawls and a rhino in the arena. The most shocking moment of the trailer involves the interaction between Lucius and his mother, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). Lucius has believed his father to be Lucius Verus I all his life. Before his son prepares for battle, Lucilla reveals that Lucius’ father is Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), the hero at the center of the battle. Gladiator.

“Lucius, take your father’s power. His name was Maximus and I see it in you,” Lucilla tells her son in the trailer.

In an interview Entertainment WeeklyMescal explained that Scott brought up Lucius’ parenting in their first conversation. “He mentioned it in the conversation, but then to see it written down on the page is a humbling thing, and it’s interesting that (that) responsibility falls on your shoulders,” Mescal said.

Along with Mescal and Nielsen, Gladiator IIs ensemble cast features Pedro Pascal As Marcus Acacius, Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta, Fred Hechinger as Emperor Caracalla, and Denzel Washington as Macrinus. Washington’s Macrinus is a power broker who possesses Lucius and trains him to be a gladiator. With Lucius’ help, Macrinus aims to seize the throne.

Scott is directing Gladiator II From a screenplay by David Scarpa, adapted from a story he wrote with Peter Craig. As a sequel that took 24 years, Gladiator II finds itself on our list The most anticipated movies of fall 2024.
