Your views on Glasgow and Edinburgh’s defeats to URC

We asked you for your views on the opening matches of the two Scottish clubs in the new URC season.

Last season’s champions, Glasgow, started the season with a 20-19 defeat to Ulster, while Edinburgh lost 33-31 at home to Leinster.

GLASGOW FANS

Brendan: I thought Glasgow left a few points on the field. They clearly had the upper hand in the group. But as the old adage goes, never let an opponent fool around with a chance of winning.

Gordon: Warriors were a bit unlucky and picked up two yellow cards. Three key moments that hurt Glasgow: Tom Jordan’s strike, Jordan’s yellow card and a maul penalty in the dying minutes when Ulster were getting nowhere.

Stuart: The Warriors were clearly the better side in this clash. Even with 13 men they looked capable of winning. Ulster made good use of their two-point advantage and should feel lucky to escape with a win. A blow to this display perhaps, but Franco Smith’s foot soldiers will not be wondering what lies ahead, they will come back strong.

Gordon: A really bad performance against a really bad opponent. The referee couldn’t manage it, Dave Shanahan was on his knees when he scored. Bad refereeing was the reason he didn’t listen to Kyle Steyn. Hangover season is coming!

Douglas: Ulster were poor for most of the game. Smith must have been mad to lose this game, there should be a hairdryer in the dressing room.

Take it: I don’t think there’s anything to panic about at the moment, it’s unlikely anyone will go through the URC season unbeaten. Glasgow should have scored more when they dominated early in the game and with five quick penalties in defence Ulster probably had a man in the bin. Did the last try come from somewhere above the knees?

EDINBURGH FANS

David: I thought Muncaster, Matt Scott and Magnus Bradbery were really good. Ross Thompson’s first goal was promising for the future. Duhan van der Merve and Mosese Tuipulotu didn’t get much chance to shine. Defensively, I have to ask if we got five tries, shouldn’t we win? The effort was flawless, Leinster knew how to win that game.

Dominic: Although the boss is not new, this side is the same as last year; sloppy defending, poor kicking and chaotic at times. Leinster were patient, disciplined, clinical and without most of their first team. Edinburgh are tenth at best.

the Lord: Not good enough for Edinburgh squad. His performance is lacking.

Kenny: A close result in the end with plenty to encourage the Edinburgh fans. A bit of rust in some parts of the game but a good first game under the belt. Impressive performances from new signings, particularly Thompson, but Price disappointing with a noticeable improvement when Ben Vellacott came on.

Scott: An improvement in attack from last season but many deficiencies remain. There was an expectation of a win against Leinster, in front of full fans, at home against a very weak team. But the performance was lacking. Questions need to be asked about team selection (Price starting instead of Vellacott) and motivation. Edinburgh continue to underperform.

Arran: I thought there were some good sparks in attack but ultimately we kept shooting ourselves in the foot with missed opportunities off the line. I think Vellacott was ruled out early on but overall a strong start against a Leinster side with insane depth.
