What does Consumer Reports say about Toyota’s reliability?

According to a new report Consumer Reports (by subscription), Toyota is ranked as the second most reliable carmaker. Lexus is at number one. This ranking is the first brand ranking for used cars and is a major milestone in the automotive industry.

Why are Lexus and Toyota always ahead of the rest?

“Brands like Lexus and Toyota have a history of doing conservative redesigns, gradually improving their entire product lines rather than introducing lots of new systems,” says Steven Elek, senior automotive data analyst for Consumer Reports.

I like the new brand rankings for used cars. They use 5 to 10 year old models for this analysis. Also, the new car reliability rankings are based on CR’s analysis of reliability over the last three years, brand history, and factors like shared components.

Toyota is not perfect.

Toyota suspended sales of the Grand Highlander and Lexus TX models in August and was forced to buy back about a dozen models from consumers.

Kent Rice, group vice president of quality for Toyota Motor North America, said: Automotive News (by subscription) Two large crossovers failed a random NHTSA inspection in May involving the vehicles’ side curtain shield airbags. Toyota plans to repair the vehicles for consumers and restart idled production in Indiana by the end of October.

“We make mistakes, right? This is a difficult and complex business. It’s just a matter of what we have to do to make it right for the customer. This is our opportunity to put our values into action. In May, NHTSA conducted a random compliance inspection of the Grand Highlander to determine whether it met Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. “We failed,” Rice said.
