Was QB Avery Johnson at Fault in Kansas State’s Embarrassing Loss?

Was QB Avery Johnson at Fault in Kansas State’s Embarrassing Loss?

Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson was far from at his best for the Wildcats in Week 4.

The sophomore QB finished with 15 completions for 130 passing yards and two interceptions. But the BYU Cougars had a hard time containing his talent on the field. He recorded 74 rushing yards on 11 carries.

K-State coach Chris Klieman warns public that Johnson shouldn’t be held responsible for the loss.

“We talked at halftime,” Klieman said. “I knew he was nervous. I love the kid. He’s a competitor. He’s a fighter. He’s going to learn from everything.”

“You can’t pin it on Avery,” Klieman said. “I know it’s easy. People are going to pick on him, they’re going to pick on me. That’s OK. We can both handle it. He’s a winner. He’s hard on himself. I’m looking forward to hearing from him because I know that’s the kind of kid he is.”

This is Johnson’s first poor performance in his first year as a full-time starter, and while it may not be ideal, an outburst of this nature was almost inevitable with his limited experience at center.

KLIEMAN TO CONTINUE AFTER EXPLOSION LOSS

K-State needs to address the issues quickly to begin preparing for top-25 opponent Oklahoma State in Week 5. Wildcats coach Chris Klieman couldn’t specify what went wrong in the matchup and emphasized that you have to watch the film.

“I have no idea,” Klieman said. “We’ll find out when we see the movie.”

“We gotta get to bed quick,” Klieman said. “Because we’re coming home at 6 a.m. and we gotta start working at Oklahoma State.”

The OSU Cowboys also come into the game coming off a 22-19 loss to the Utah Utes.
