Ghana lose to Angola at Baba Yara Sports Stadium

Ghana’s unbeaten run spanning over two decades at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium came to an end on Thursday, September 5, 2024, when Angola beat the Black Stars 1-0.

Felício Milson’s late goal ensured the Black Stars suffered their first defeat at the Baba Yara Stadium in 24 years.

Milson took advantage of Abdul Mumin’s poor save in the dying minutes of the match to give the Angolans a dream start to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Ghana maintained their dominance in both halves of the match, creating clear chances but were unable to capitalise on them.

Jordan Ayew, Mohammed Kudus, Fatawu Issahaku and Antoine Semenyo had goal opportunities for Ghana but they could not capitalise.

Angola took the win in injury time when Depu, who had entered the game late, sent a low cross past the goalkeeper, which was then sent into the net by Milson after Abdul Mumin cleared the ball.

Player ratings

Lawrence Ati-Zigi -5

With Ghana having more possession, Ati-Zigi didn’t have to do much but he was careful and made a few good saves.

He could have made a better cross for the goal as he was inside the six-yard box.

Tarik Lamptey – 6

Lamptey’s attacks down the right wing gave Ghana good options to stretch the Angolan defence.

Even though the forwards couldn’t benefit from his pace, he kept going and made good crosses. He was also solid defensively.

Alidu Seidu-6

The full-back’s versatility came in handy once again as he was deployed on the left side of the defence, with Seidu doing particularly well in defence.

Abdul Mumin – 4

Mumin, like most of Ghana’s players, had been performing well until the poor clearance that led to the goal, but his poor clearance that led to the goal cannot be forgiven. The pitch’s role in this error cannot be ignored either.

Muhammad Salisi – 5

Mohammed Salisu was steady in defence and sent a few long balls into the Angola penalty area but was not affected by the Angola attacks.

Elisha Owusu – 5

The Auxerre midfielder, playing alongside captain Thomas Partey, made some effective passes and managed to keep the ball, but there was nothing exciting about the game.

Thomas Partey-6

The captain played well and made an effort to move the ball quickly but the lack of understanding between him and the forward line was obvious. Overall, a good debut for Partey.

Antoine Semenyo-6

Semenyo, operating on the wings, was at his most industrious, linking up and working tirelessly in search of goal but was unlucky, he had a few good chances but his shots were saved by the Angolan goalkeeper.

Jerusalem Muhammad – 6

Kudus did his best to link the midfield with the attack and often dropped deep to pull the ball forward for Ghana but he couldn’t work his magic. Again, he could be accused of holding on to the ball for longer than necessary.

Fatawu Issahaku – 4

Issahaku, who has improved a lot at Leicester City, lacked decision-making in this match. Many of his moves and showmanship skills were useless and he lost the ball a few times.

Jordan Ayew – 5

The Leicester international was busy, dropping deep and swapping positions with his teammates to create chances for Ghana, but it just wasn’t his day.
