As AI firm OpenAI’s chatbot continues to see strong adoption thanks to its advanced broad language model, ChatGPT today announced that it has more than 1 million paid users across its Enterprise, Team, and Edu business products.

This figure is up from April’s 600,000 users, suggesting that CEO Sam Altman’s efforts to get companies to adopt ChatGPT for enterprise use are paying off.

The Information also reported today that OpenAI executives are discussing higher-priced subscriptions for upcoming large language models, such as the reasoning-focused Strawberry and a new flagship LLM program called Orion.

Initial internal discussions at OpenAI discussed subscription prices of up to $2,000 per month, the report said, citing a person with direct knowledge of the figures.

ChatGPT Plus currently costs $20 per month. The free tier of the model is used by hundreds of millions of users every month.

Microsoft-backed OpenAI is working on “Strawberry” with the aim of enabling AI models to perform deep research, Reuters exclusively reported earlier in July.

The report noted that Strawberry incorporates a special way of implementing OpenAI’s generative AI models known as “post-training,” or adapting the underlying models to improve their performance in specific ways after they have been “trained” on generalized reams of data.

The pricing talks come after media reports that Apple and chip giant Nvidia are in talks to invest in OpenAI as part of a new investment round that could value the ChatGPT maker at over $100 billion.

Last week, the AI startup behind the wildly popular app ChatGPT announced that the chatbot has more than 200 million weekly active users, double the number from last fall season.
