Fort Worth has always loved these tacos. Now they’re back in a new Southside restaurant

Once upon a time, in a land not too far away, there was a little local taco shop called Fuzzy’s.

Then came Pedro’s Trailer Park, Buffalo Cantina, Yucatan, and many more big-hitting restaurants, all the work of the late chef Paul Willis.

Now some of her original recipes and team are back.

With a few updates in 2024, they revived a worn-out patio restaurant on the Southside and reopened it as Tres Amigos Tacos & Tequila at 909 W. Magnolia Ave.

Tres Amigos started with the original tempura fish or smoked beef brisket tacos that launched Willis’ success before Fuzzy’s was sold and watered down by out-of-state companies. It’s now owned by IHoP.

Tres Amigos also added updated enchiladas, grilled salmon, chorizo meatballs and garlic ribeye dinner plates to the menu.

Owner Sandy Rankin has worked at many of Willis’ restaurants and has recreated their salsas, sauces and also their margaritas.

Commenters on social media were quick to point out the massive servings of nachos, which come with a choice of beef, chicken or carnitas, along with queso, guacamole, jalapenos and garlic aioli.

The 12 tacos include a seafood and shrimp taco with chimichurri sauce, a soft-shell crab taco with lobster queso, a mango-habanero tempura shrimp taco, and several tacos served with plenty of freshly chopped vegetables.

On my visit this week, the tacos had regained their former vibrancy and flavor. The tortillas were fresh and delicious. The steak and shrimp taco was amazing, and the mango-habanero shrimp taco looked like something that might have been on the Day One menu when the local owners founded Fuzzy’s.

One innovation: ribeye with garlic butter, made the way Willis’ friend Keith Kidwill used to make it at the long-closed and much-missed M & M Steak House near the Stockyards.

The table and chairs for Tres Amigos also came from M&M.

Breakfast starts at 7am daily and includes tacos or bowls with chilaquiles with the same spicy sauces.

The original Fuzzy’s/Pedro’s/Yucatan table chili sauce is back with a slightly milder rendition. There’s also a four-pepper sauce that Willis introduced at Buffalo Cantina.
