The National Council for Persons with Disabilities today received a shipment of $1.2 million worth of assistive devices to assist members.

The shipment was provided by the Spinal Injuries Association with assistance from PhysioNew and the Vodafone ATH Foundation.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Protection, Eseta Nadakuitavuki, handed over the devices and medical supplies to the NCPD this morning.

They thanked stakeholders for their assistance and emphasized that this was in line with the government’s National Development Plan to support marginalized members of our communities.

The Permanent Secretary says the well-being of people with disabilities will be enhanced by facilitating their participation in decision-making processes and providing friendly public facilities and infrastructure.

He adds that the government remains committed to hearing the voices of disabled people and disability organisations.

“To lay the foundation for achieving the vision, the NDP is implementing a set of policies and strategies across 3 pillars: economic resilience, people empowerment and good governance.”

Nadakuitavuki said these products are not readily available in the country and are costly to supply.

PS says the demand for assistive devices is high and has called on all stakeholders to work together and use our resources efficiently and effectively to ensure such items in shipment reach those who need them most.

He adds that motorized scooters, various types and designs of wheelchairs, hospital beds, toilets, shower chairs and crutches, and medical consumables such as diapers, gloves, face masks and pads will greatly help the beneficiaries.
