South Bend matchups, analysis determined as area

The IHSAA announced boys and girls soccer regional matchups Sunday night ahead of the statewide postseason tournament that begins Monday, Oct. 7.

There are a few stories to follow from the South Bend area, including the top two ranked teams in the girls Class 2A poll being in the same division. Here are three important results from Sunday’s draw; all South Bend area brackets are listed below the story.

Daughters of Saint Joseph and Marian on opposite sides of the draw

One of the fears of a blind draw like this is that two elite teams in a division will face each other in the first round. Fortunately, that didn’t happen here, as No. 1 South Bend Saint Joseph (10-4) and No. 2 Mishawaka Marian (10-3-2) were on opposing sides of the five-team Regional 18 girls soccer draw. The top-seeded Huskies will need to win three games compared to two for the host Knights, as Saint Joseph will face a strong Jimtown team (12-2-1) in its lone opening-round contest on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

If the qualification holds, there will be an all-time clash between the two arch-rivals at ABRO Stadium on October 12.

Northridge and Concord men’s teams hold slight advantage

There’s really no easy path in the men’s soccer division hosted by Penn, but two Elkhart County teams in Northridge and Concord are at least tied. The Raiders (8-4-2) and the 15th-ranked Minutemen (10-2-2) will meet in the semifinals, leaving Penn (8-4-2) and 13th-ranked Goshen (11-3-1). , Elkhart (8-4-1) and Mishawaka (0-11) are in the top half of the bracket.

Class 1A girls section loaded

Considering the number of ranked teams from the South Bend area, nothing tops the girls’ Class 1A, Section 35 field. The four teams in the top 13 in the latest 1A coaches poll are: No. 5 Westview, No. 8 South Bend Trinity, No. 10 Elkhart Christian Academy and No. 13 Bremen. While ECA and Trinity face each other in the quarterfinals, Bremen does not have an easy opponent in the first round for the 12-2 Lakewood Park Christian team. The quality of football in Westview will be high all week long.
