Tottenham’s player ratings against Manchester United: Micky van de Ven is superb but Timo Werner struggles again

One of a kind: Micky van de Ven scores another superb run and assist for Tottenham (Action footage via Reuters)

Tottenham They had one of their best performances in a year, defeating 10 people under the management of Ange Postecoglou. Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Brennan Johnson’s fourth goal on the bounce got Spurs off to the perfect start and a dejected United were dealt a further blow when captain Bruno Fernandes was shown a straight red card for lunging at James Maddison shortly before the break.

Spurs added a second early in the second half through Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke headed home a thumping winner from close range.

We evaluated the guest players as follows…

Guglielmo Vicario 7

Joshua Zirkzee was denied a first-half equalizer with a powerful one-handed stop. He owned and commanded his territory.

Pedro Porro 7

He was prepared defensively and came forward well to support Johnson.

Cristian Romero7

He made a crucial block in the second half to deflect Alejandro Garnacho’s effort but blocked it in stoppage time to create a great chance for Matthijs de Ligt. Excellent with the ball at his feet.

Micky van de Ven 9

He produced another magnificent assist with his run from his own half, following Johnson’s magnificent cross. There is no other defender in the world who can do his best.

Destiny Udogie 8

It was very difficult for United to recover possession in the first half and they came close with shots after entering the penalty area twice. He struggled at the interval due to what appeared to be a muscle problem.

Rodrigo Bentancur 8

Another quietly commanding display low in midfield, calmly recycling the ball and providing a platform for Spurs’ attackers to express themselves.

Dejan Kulusevski 9

He was outstanding again in the midfield and peaked his performance by expertly finishing the second goal. He clearly enjoys playing in the middle.

James Madison 8

Maddison was live with or without the ball, ahead of watching England boss Lee Carsley. He looked to enjoy passing the ball with the outside of his boot and his exchange with Kulusevski was superb.

brennan johnson 8

He scored in the fourth game and hit the post again in a thrilling performance. What a turnaround since the Arsenal defeat.

Timo Werner 6

He missed two one-on-ones with tame shots that were too close to goalkeeper Andre Onana. He always provided a way out and built good relationships with Udogie and Spence, but he needs to take chances.

Dominik Solanke 8

He was tireless at centre-forward and deserved his third goal in as many matches. He never stopped running and his connect play was impressive. I missed a late one-on-one game.

Djed Spence (Udogie 45′) 7

I’m not afraid to carry the ball forward and there’s no nonsense at the back.

Lucas Bergvall (Werner 76′) 7

Sarr helped Solanke score with his first touch as he headed for the corner. He was silky on the ball as Spurs went into a big game.

Pape Matar Sarr (Maddison 76′) 7

He nodded Bergvall’s corner into the path of Solanke and set up a goal within seconds of his initial arrival, but missed the golden goal opportunity by shaking his head left and right while the goal was open.

Mikey Moore (Johnson 76′) 7

He showed glimpses of class with a few deliberate runs down the left and curling a shot wide.

Radu Dragusin (van de Ven 81′) 6

Van de Ven was given the last 10 minutes of rest.

Not used: Forster, Bissouma, Gray, Lankshear.
