Top criminals released under police supervision after August 5: DMP commissioner

According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Mainul Hasan, top criminals who were released from jails after August 5 following the fall of the Awami League government following the influx of students and people were kept under police surveillance.

He made the statement today during the opening of the “Walton-CRAB Sports Festival-2024” football tournament organized by Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) at Paltan Foreign Stadium.

“Those who have already been released from prison (top criminals) were released through the court after serving long prison sentences. They are currently under our custody. Legal action will be taken against them if they are involved in this,” the DMP boss said. in new crimes.”

According to the Department of Prisons, at least 43 high-profile criminals and militants have been released on bail since August 5. In recent weeks we have witnessed numerous allegations against these individuals, including murder, extortion and toll collection. A murder case has been registered at Mohammadpur Police Station against top criminal Imamul Hasan Helal, also known as Pichchi Helal. Helal was released on August 16 after 24 years in prison.

When asked about the police officers who did not continue their duties, the DMP Commissioner said that the number was very small. “Necessary action will be taken against those who do not return to duty,” he said.

It is stated that as of now, there are at least 187 police constables, ranging from Deputy Inspector General to constable.

Commissioner Hasan assured that all police stations in Dhaka remain functional, repair work is ongoing in three or four police stations and will be completed in the next few days.

On crime prevention, the DMP chief emphasized the force’s proactive approach, including regular patrols and investigative efforts to quickly identify and apprehend criminals.

“We are carrying out joint operations similar to the operation carried out in the Geneva Camp last night, in which firearms and locally produced weapons were seized and many arrests were made,” he added.

Earlier, in his opening remarks, Commissioner Hasan emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong relationship between DMP and crime reporters. “We have one goal: to maintain peace and order in Dhaka. Crime reporters help us with valuable information,” he said.

CRAB Chairman Kamruzzaman Khan chaired the meeting, which was attended by various DMP officials and former CRAB leaders.
