As Legend of Vox Machina Releases Free Ahead of Season 3, Critical Role Stars Talk ‘Truly Embracing’ Changes to Original Story

It’s so fun. As part of the adaptation process, we want to carry the true spirit of the original campaign throughout the series, really embracing the fact that the original campaign will always be there, but we also want to allow for moments where we can show parts of the story that we haven’t shown. ‘We’ll have the chance to show the players’ perspective on the original campaign, which was a surprise to everyone in so many wonderful ways.

The first two seasons have already offered some examples of scenes that don’t feature any of the original cast characters, and it’s safe to say that this will continue in the third season. Mercer continued:

And in hindsight, we (could) go back and change a few things here and there to better serve the overall narrative in a way that would surely surprise the original audience of the campaign. These changes were all made with consensus and enthusiasm, and were intended to serve the story more than anything else, and there was also the benefit of knowing that it would actually disappoint a few people’s expectations. (laughs)

Travis Willingham, who voices Grog and co-wrote several episodes with cast member Sam Riegel, shared his take on the “mission” to subvert expectations with the Prime Video adaptation of the original story. He shared the following with CinemaBlend in a group interview with several of his fellow cast members/EPs:

For us, most of our audience has an expectation of what’s going to happen, and our mission is to subvert those expectations and redirect the way the story is told so people know what’s going to happen, but we also want to see the effects of that. It will continue and keep people wondering what will happen from episode to episode. So if we can do that, we think we’ve been effective in our storytelling this time.

As for whether they enjoyed building tension even for campaign viewers who knew the original story, Ashley Johnson, who voices Pike, and appeared The Last of Us‘ live action TV show After voicing Ellie in the video games, it was a pretty perfect role — to which she immediately responded, “Absolutely.” Marisha Ray, sound Keyleth shared her views:

The footage also shows that the Keyleth/Vax romance is back on track after some setbacks in Season 2. Liam O’Brien, the voice of Vax’ildan, shared his thoughts on the transition from desk to screen:

I also see this as an extension of the work we do at the table for the eight of us. We all like to shock each other, surprise each other with our moments at the table, and now we’re doing it for a lot more people. This is all about storytelling.

Travis Willingham shared some parting thoughts on building suspense for fans of the original Critical Role campaign and just viewers of the show:

We’re fans of these types of stories, so we’ve seen when it’s done well and when it’s not so well done. For us, we have the advantage of knowing exactly who this story is for. We did this for ourselves, and we did this for our fans and the people who have been with us along the way. We think we’re in pretty tight agreement.

Season 3 also stars Laura Bailey as Vex’ahlia, Taliesin Jaffe as Percy, and Sam Riegel as Scanlan. Legend of Vox Machina It will see the group travel to hell and back as part of a mission to overthrow the Chroma Conclave of dragons and save Exandria.
