Continue Cancer Hockey Tournament fundraising efforts for Marquette County cancer patients

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – The annual Stick It to Cancer Hockey Tournament, which raises funds for cancer patients, returned Saturday.

This is the eighth annual Stick It to Cancer adult co-ed hockey tournament. The tournament started in 2017 when a 12-year-old hockey player was diagnosed with cancer.

The Society and Marquette Cancer Care organized this tournament to assist patients and families with expenses incurred during treatment.

“(The money we give) helps with travel, helps with accommodations, helps with prescriptions, it’s just extra money,” said Barbara Salmela, organizer of Stick It to Cancer. “People understand that cancer treatment is very costly, and if you have to travel it becomes even more costly.”

Championship games will take place on Sunday at 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. There is no fee for entry, but donations are encouraged.

Salmela thanks the volunteers and sponsors of the event.
