Herrmann named Amtrak’s general counsel

WASHINGTON — Amtrak has appointed Byl Herrmann as vice president and general counsel, responsible for the company’s legal department’s long-term priorities and annual work plan.

“Byl has guided the evolution and corporate development of Amtrak’s Legal department for decades and brings a broad and deep knowledge of all aspects of the company,” said Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner. a press release. “Building on the strong legacy established by his predecessor, Eldie Acheson, he is the right person to help move the company forward as we build a new era of railroading in the United States.”

Herrmann’s new position will be effective October 1, when he replaces Acheson. He will remain in his roles as corporate secretary and ethics officer at Amtrak until January 2025, after which Herrmann will assume both roles.

Herrmann joined the Amtrak Legal Department in 1999 and served in such roles as vice president of Human Resources and, most recently, vice president and deputy senior executive general counsel and assistant corporate secretary. In this position, he managed or supervised litigation, transactions, legal compliance, and the corporate secretary’s office.
