Vikramaditya Motwane Reacts to CTRL and ESOTSM Comparisons: ‘Might Remind Me of Joaquin Phoenix…’ | Special

The entirety of CTRL will be released on Netflix on October 4th.

Vikramaditya Motwane knew that after writing the script for CTRL, people would ask him questions about Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. He describes the first as more ‘up-to-date’.

Vikramaditya Motwane’s next film, CTRL, starring Ananya Panday, explores the question: In a world where data is power, how much of ourselves should we share online and what happens when we lose control of that information? The trailer offers a glimpse into a scene where an impressive couple breaks up and the girl uses artificial intelligence to delete her ex-boyfriend’s digital presence. Although praised for its genre-defining innovation, many compare the core of CTRL’s plot to the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.

In Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, a movie ahead of its time starring Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey, two people undergo memory erasure to forget each other after their breakup. Vikramaditya, in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, reacts to these comparisons and states that CTRL may also remind the audience of Joaquin Phoenix starrer Her. “We knew the moment we wrote the movie that they would ask us about Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. But we’re okay with that (comparisons). “There’s a little bit of Him in it,” he tells us.

However, although Vikramaditya sees the Michel Gondry film as an inspiration in his journey as a filmmaker, he points out that the two films are different in terms of content. “Overall, I was impressed by that movie. It’s a great movie. There is something amazing about the writing of this movie. The directing and acting are incredible. It is undoubtedly a masterpiece of our modern times. But CTRL is not like that,” he explains.

Stating that CTRL is a film loaded with ‘topicality’ that sheds light on the dark side of social media, he explains: “It’s about how more sharing is too much sharing and what the dopamine hits like and favorites give you.” It depends on how much you do for social media. This is like a doomsday scenario and it is not impossible to believe. I have a feeling that in 15-20 years we will start looking at social media the same way they look at cigarettes. “There are a lot of things that are okay with that, but it also does a lot of harm to teenagers, young minds, and even adults.”

And Vikramaditya believes that going forward, CTRL will become even more relevant. The creator of Jubilee and Udaan says, “If your whole life is based on the fact that your validation comes from outside and not from within, these are questions that need to be asked. CTRL, influence, the internet, your own memories on the internet, how much you put out there, how much you want to control, and how much you want to control.” It comes from a lot of the questions we ask in general, as in reality, a lot of things come together in this movie.”

The entirety of CTRL will be released on Netflix on October 4th.
