“There was an unfortunate fire incident at our factory in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Our emergency protocols at the factory ensured that all our employees were safe. “The cause of the fire is being investigated and we will take necessary measures to protect the interests of our employees and other stakeholders,” Tata Electronics said in a statement.

According to media reports, the fire started at the company’s mobile phone accessories dyeing unit located in Uddanapalli. Although three employees showed signs of respiratory problems, they were taken to a private hospital and their condition was reported to be stable.

This coincided with Tata Electronics starting production at its iPhone assembly plant in Hosur’s Koothanapalli. Hosur will be Tata Electronics’ second iPhone assembly plant after Taiwanese EMS player Wistron acquired the unit, which it has been working on for two years.

Tata Electronics is expected to invest around Rs 6,000 billion in the assembly plant and has invested a similar amount in the component plant that supplies Apple at the same location.

According to sources, the combined facilities will employ more than 50,000 blue-collar workers, mostly women. The iPhone assembly plant alone will add 35,000-40,000 employees, making it one of Apple’s largest facilities in India, second only to Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu facility.
