SunLive – Black Ferns to kick off WXV1 Tournament

The Black Ferns will face Ireland for the third time in the opening Test Match at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada, on September 30.

“We know Ireland will be a great challenge for us in this part of our journey,” said Black Ferns director of rugby Allan Bunting.

The two teams will compete in WXV1, an annual women’s rugby tournament between national teams.

The match will see various Black Ferns reach milestones, including Chelsea Bremner and Renee Holmes from their 20th test.

“Both Chelsea and Renee are dedicated and committed to their growth. It was inspiring to see them continue to improve on and off the field. This is a testament to their commitment to serving this jersey,” Bunting said.

There will be many firsts in the test match against Ireland, with hooker Atlanta Lolohea named in the starting 15 and Marcelle Parkes starting in loose support.

“Marcelle’s place in the starting side is a testament to her commitment and determination to move into the front row. Atlanta’s drive and commitment to growth is extraordinary, and we look forward to seeing both take advantage of this opportunity,” Bunting said.

Tighthead prop Amy Rule will start alongside Parkes and Lolohea. The Black Ferns selected Layla Sae at number six, Black Ferns Vice-Captain Kennedy Tukuafu at openside and Liana Mikaele-Tu’u at number eight.

At the back, the return of the attacking midfield combination of Amy du Plessis and Logo-i-Pulotu Lemapu-Atai’i (Sylvia) Brunt brings Black Ferns Vice-Captain Ruahei Demant back into the starting five-eighth position with an energetic winger. Ruby Tui will start on the right wing.

On the bench, hooker Luka Connor joins the strong bench front row in Chryss Viliko and Tanya Kalounivale. Hard-working loose forward Lucy Jenkins and tailback Mererangi Paul get the opportunity to channel their energy from the bench for the first time this tour.

The two sides have only met twice before, winning one match each. Bunting said the team was excited to face Ireland in this opening match of the WXV1 Tournament.

“It has been inspiring to see their progress this year. But for us, we want to make sure we start our WXV1 campaign playing our game.”
