Conic Film released the official trailer of its new movie. documentary film in the name A Sudden Look into Deeper ThingsThe latest documentary by famous Irish filmmaker Mark Cousins. This recently premiered in the Main Competition of the 2024 Karlovy Vary Film Festival (here is my comment), where he won the best Crystal Globe competition award. Featured Tilda Swinton As the voice of the Scottish painter Wilhelmina Barns-GrahamBetter known as “Willie”, this feature-length documentary tells the story of an extraordinary artist and a magnificent obsession. We explore the pivotal experience in 1949 atop the Grindelwald glacier in Switzerland that reshaped the British modernist painter’s artistic outlook for decades to come. The film, shot with the support of the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, examines archives, private notebooks and diaries from the artist’s 65-year career. Twenty years after his death in 2004, the film represents a major reassessment of Barns-Graham’s life, work, and place in 20th-century art. He is truly a great artist and while watching this documentary, I was hearing his name for the first time. You should watch it to get a glimpse of many of his magnificent paintings, especially all the mountains.

One day in 1949, a young Scottish painter climbed a Swiss glacier. This experience rewired his brain and transformed his art. Barns-Graham was synaesthetic; he associated letters, names, people with certain colors, and Cousins explores how his neurodiversity and his encounter with the glacier shaped his worldview. Born and raised in St Andrews, Barns-Graham served in World War II. He was a member of the modernist group of artists who lived in the small Cornish seaside town of St Ives from World War II. Inspired by his experience in Switzerland, his glacier paintings became a turning point in his artistic career. The film explores themes of gender, neurodiversity, climate change, and the nature of creativity from youth to old age, through a cinematic perspective on the artist’s art and life.
