There’s a new Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater trailer that shows off a comprehensive sequence of the game’s early cutscenes, and it looks both gorgeous and absolutely faithful to the 2004 original. However, there’s something a bit odd about the old voice acting coming out of the new character models.

Metal Gear Solid Delta reuses voice acting from the original MGS3So the distribution of the entire series is the same as in 2004. The original Snake Eater has one of the best vocal performances of all time, and its combination of military thriller drama and wacky anime antics make it all utterly memorable. . There’s a reason why David Hayter’s performance as Snake is absolutely iconic.

But while the camp works great in the slightly stylized look of the PS2 original, it looks much weirder when revealed from a set of modern, highly realistic character models. Just take a look at the trailer below. Look at when Snake starts talking around 0:43. A bit off, isn’t it?

Part of this was the lip-syncing, which seemed a bit odd even in 2004 due to the oddly tiny mouth movements. However, when paired with new character models, the effect is nearly a thousand times more intense and oversized Anime lines like “He hasn’t found an emotion yet to carry into battle” don’t play into this aesthetic in the same way.

Some purists worry that Delta has lost some of the spirit of the original. Reminds me of the ‘Nintendo, hire this guy’ meme with reference to realistic visual style. I’m not sure I agree – I’m really happy to see Konami working on Metal Gear in a way that respects what people enjoy – but the new look definitely looks like it’ll strike the balance between campy and campy. and the drama is more mysterious than ever.

The Metal Gear Solid Delta developer says they wanted the game to be “almost too faithful” and explains why it’s not being called “the Hideo Kojima game.”
