A posthumous biography of Lisa Marie Presley has revealed how she spiraled into substance abuse after giving birth to her twins in 2008 and how she recovered from her opioid addiction to the big leagues.

Lisa Marie Presley passed away on January 12, 2023, at the age of 54, following a mild intestinal obstruction caused by past weight loss surgery. Opioids were detected in his blood at the time of his death.

But Presley had long had concerns about losing his father, Elvis Presley, who died of complications related to drug addiction in 1977, although he was only 9 years old at the time.

As Lisa Marie explains in her autopsy memoir From Here to the Great Unknown, featured exclusively in this week’s PEOPLE magazine cover story, “I was always worried about my father dying. He would act strangely when I saw him sometimes. Lisa Marie was a rebellious teenager who used drugs years after Elvis Presley’s death. She enjoyed many years of stability after marrying her first husband, Danny Keough, and giving birth to Riley at age 21.

Despite their divorce in 1994, she describes in her memoirs how Danny continued to be a pillar of support for her and their children. Besides Riley, Lisa Marie and Danny had a son named Benjamin, who committed suicide in 2020 at the age of 27.

Lisa Marie developed an addiction to prescription painkillers after giving birth to twins Finley and Harper in 2008 (with husband Michael Lockwood from 2006 to 2021).
