MAME Can Now Emulate More Classic PCs

MAME

The MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) development team has released version 0.270 of the popular emulation software. This update adds several systems, including the Zoomer PDA, which was one of the first PDAs to include software developed by Palm Computing.

Different other updates Focused on games, this update focuses on ensuring MAME handles emulation of older and more obscure systems. It also provides support for more Apple II input peripherals and hard-sector floppy disk formats. It also expands the storage options of S-100-era computers. The biggest part of this update is the addition of the Hitachi Basic Master Jr, which represents the Japanese home computer market of the early 1980s. A lesser-known system, The Super A’Can, was UMC’s attempt to compete with Sega and Nintendo in the mid-1990s. This system has developed but is not yet considered fully functional.

While it’s disappointing that the Super A’Can update is still not ready, Hitachi Basic Master Jr. and many other systems were made operational, including many IGS games. The company notes that it has made progress in understanding the IGS027A CPUs and offloading their internal programs, which has led to more than a dozen IGS slots, mahjong, and card games becoming playable in MAME 0.270. The software list has been expanded with new work items for various platforms such as Commodore 64, MSX, NES and ZX Spectrum. Also added are new working clones such as the Sega Toys Mega Drive Play TV 1 (Japan) and the Fidelity International The Classic (model CC8) chess computer.

Unfortunately, new systems marked as not working include the IBM ThinkPad 850, Elektronika PK-32, and various arcade games. Additionally, new clones marked as non-working include the Automat bootleg copy of Robocop and the Yamaha MU90B. However, the team managed to fix many bugs in this version, including graphical issues in Super A’Can and the right-most column of the screen not appearing on the Tandy Color Computer 3. MAME’s operating modes for switching between windowed and full screen have also been improved.
